Modern, independent tyre test done for a German magazine on early 911 tyres.

    Hi

Some time ago a German magazine called Autoblid Klassik did a proper modern tyre test on the classic tyres that are available for early 911.

The web page link above has the article on it which has been translated to English. Then there is Porsche's recommendations for tyres for their classic cars. Then top left there is a link to a web page called Klassic Porsche Reifen which has the original article in German.

    Hi

I must say the thing that surprised me is that Michelin didn't do very well. but the things that they didn't do in the test are things like directional stability at cruising speeds and longevity of the tyre, which are 2 categories that Michelin always do very well with, and making tyres is always a balance. The strong structured carcass and that helps directional stability and the durable rubber compound that gives a tyre some longevity and means that the XWX really can withdstand extended track time are things that work against performance in the wet.

However i was suprised to see such an investment in an article. I don't think i have seen a modern tyre test done on classic tyres before.

And of course i am really quite smug about how well the Pirelli performed

Thank you for sharing!. Great article.
I'm surprised to see how good Vredsteins are doing.
They are receiving bad reviews very often on this (and other) forum but based on those test results they seem to be a very good (if not the best) value for the money.

Wet handling--not really a consideration in my book. That's what Toyotas are for.

If you take long trips you're bound to get rained on eventually, and if you don't,,,,why not

XWX's were notoriously bad in the wet. You could aquaplane at anything over 60. Thats why the CN36 was THE choice when it came out. That said, the P7 was just as bad. Bridgestone has consistently good tires for both wet and dry. Goodyear usually has good rain patterns too.
I prefer keeping it on the island even if not original.
Ed, missed you on the Burnet after Thanksgiving drive, I actually got caught in bit of a drizzle with the top off on the way up.
