Thread: Fenders Old vs "New"

  1. #41
Just doing some research on replacement fenders and have a comment about Dansk/Porsche. The fenders currently provided by Porsche Classic are NOT made by Dansk. Much of their classic sheet metal is made by a company with a factory near Stuttgart. I personally saw production of SWB fenders at that location last month. I have ordered a pair through the local Porsche dealer and will report back on fit and features.

I have noticed the Porsche fenders to be noticeably high quality, the spot welds, the crispness, the fit, it's all really good. Whoever makes them is doing a great job.

I always check the crispness of the spot welds, the Porsche panels have really crisp spot welds without any "splatter" or variance in size. Better spot welds than the cars were originally built with. They put a lot of effort into those replacement fenders. The hoods are amazing too, I was very impressed with them.

Something else to think about is bodywork, new panels are almost perfect, much less filler, blocking, primer, blocking.... All that bodywork can get expensive, new panels save time/money.

I am all for replacement panels, I think the usable used panels have dried up, seems impossible to find good ones.

I have a pair of Porsche Classic front fenders now and have initially mounted them - the fit is pretty good, but will require some minor adjustment here and there.

I've had terrible experiences fitting Dansk metal parts. Now I get all metal parts and rubber trim from the dealer. Much better quality.

My guess is Dansk makes all the fenders, Porsche just puts their sticker on it. Some items Dansk may make and Porsche has the exclusive right to retail. All Dansk body panels need significant re-shaping right out of the box - nothing fits.
I sold a NOS 68 fender (it still had the NOS stickers on it) to one of the high end restoration shops for a 67S restoration. They added the wider fender lip. As Mark said it can be done. I looked at the raw metal work when done and it looked perfect.

Can certainly be done. See my example on new genuine Porsche SWB fenders: http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...l=1#post998258
