    my assumption is.
on early cars the counterplate for the hinge on the inside of the pillar is thinner(fact) and has different thread pitch 8x1?(guess).
for more strenght they went for thicker plate and at the same time for M8(1,25pitch) thread.
in order to avoid damage to the tread by useing the wrong thread bolts when repairs where carried out in the workshop(or even on the assambling line)
they marked the new pillar version with M8.

    #96 had damaged threads
    so are those on 450710(non M8 912)

just guessing and could be all wrong

update---had a look today at the undamaged threads on 450710 ...looks like i hit the nail

A public thank you to those here who are documenting nuances. (Franz and Bob among them.)
Praises to those who are discovering, documenting and preserving all the anomalies that present in pre-production and production vehicles. We must constantly protect our history against what took place in the Corvette hobby where many vehicles were "restored" to somewhat arbitrary standards as set forth in a judging guide and in the process lost true original pieces that did not conform to what was considered standard. Differences should be observed and celebrated for what they are, and not condemned because they do not meet someone's (or some organization's) artificial and sometimes misinformed idea of how everything was done back in the day.
