When I got the second edition of the RS book saw this comment and specifically checked this glass point.

Measured glass on my on my original RS vin 02xx 12/72 production car that I've had for nearly 25 years. Just fraction under 4mm like Andrea's picture

Also the paperwork dating from when car was new says specifically: "Thinner Window Glass instead of Standard Glass". This is one line in the list of equipment noted against the M472 conversion order equipment section; not against the 'base' Carrera RS or M471 or M491 conversion order sections so not to be confused with Glaverbel.

Very explicit comment that in this respect the M472 equipment fitted to examples with the conversion to M472 after being presented for homogation proposes, have thinner glass than contemporary 73 911S. The point noted in the book. One of a number of things (like 38mm wheel, lighter shell etc etc) that is different on limited edition homologation RS M472 touring vs the contemporary 73 model year 911S.

My earlier investigation tallies with glass info in the RS book and posts made previously by others in this thread.

Presumably this deliberate choice for those M472 to have this thinner glass vs 911 TES was consistent with these homologation purpose RS lighter weight chassis retaining their various thinner homogation purposes sheet metal panels even after M472 conversion.

Another of those specification subtleties on those first 500 (and probably second 500) series M472 homologation chassis -- the 1000 examples known to have been officially presented / weighed at the Stuttgart town scales as proof to the sporting authorities.

Subtleties like this thin glass and the thin body panels often get overlooked by folks who ought to know better than to say "not a lightweight", whenever they hear M472 Touring.

My first series touring RS has its original thin Glaverbel windshield. Apparently there are only a couple that ever survived as they were so thin that they broke very easily.

Even on all the "all original" RS's they have no doubt replaced the windshield.

Would someone with a regular 73 911 T/E/S measure their clear glass, just the roll up window, and post it? G.Led

    Gordon,
My 73T, with TINTED factory glass, USA car made April 1973. The front passenger roll up window is 4.64mm... maybe someone has the clear window.

Seems to correlate ...roughly ...with Andrea's 911 S in post #10 ie both standard examples being significantly thicker than his RS less than 4mm measurement

The standard glass has a different DOT code, DOT M51 vs DOT M89 of the thinner RS glass.

Steve, would you expect the thinner Sekurit glass on a M471 car for the descending windows?

    Hi Andrea

Yes the glass in my cars 'descending' windows measured similar to the 3.95 in your example. I iirc it was roughly in range 3.9 to 4.1 when I took a number of measurements along edge and certainly noticeably less than a number of 72/3 TES cars I measured that were passing through my friends long established Porsche independent specialist shop. Didn't photograph any vernier readings but at the time I did satisfy myself that my M472 example was as in line compared to author comment in RS book ie RS had thinner Sekurit glass than contemporary 911.

Sorry: Don't know about M471 based on proven facts and my own measurements but would be odd if not thin

I have a clear glass 72 coupe. Except that I can't find my darn calipers. I'll get a pair of calipers and measure it.

    Hi SKM

Will be interesting to compare you glass marking to other third series RS cars built in M471 and 472 form

Does your example have opening rear quarter lights or fixed-- curious to see etchings on those panes too.

Also rear backlight-- need to check my first series example as have been focusing on the side window markings and thickness

Thanks for sharing pictures SKM (sorry don't know your name)

Do you have two base so called RSH examples-- the one from post #10 looks white (or ivory) whereas the picture of another of the just estimated 17 911 744 that never received any Mxxx appears to be red?
