One thing I think of is traffic. Of course you want a local Car Culture but Monterey is so crammed with traffic that I wonder about moving back there. What about the North Coast? I would say "The Sea Ranch" but the culture there is very car unfriendly. Great setting with open roads up there and not so overrun with slo-mo tourists. Cambria is the last coastal town that doesn't feel like you are in LA [no offense but I prefer more trees, etc]. BTW, Cambria gets a fair amount of car clubs and has a lot of interesting nearby back roads.

Driving in Cal is fine as long as one doesn’t have to be a resident or be called a Californian.

Ventura County. You are close to every type of road, the mountains up to Mount Pinos, Coast Highway, Santa Barbara, Canyons not only like Decker and Encinal, Mulhulland, but Grimes, Balcom out near my place. Not far from Angeles Crest, over to Bouquet Canyon and Lake Hughs area etc. etc. Highway 50, the list goes on and on.

i was sorta asking the same question about 2 weeks ago. But mine was about cost of living.

I live very near santa cruz. santa cruz and capitola and monterey have fog....
If you go just about 5 miles inland...and get a hill between you and the ocean. the fog is reduced by half or more.
There is felton 5,000 pop, tons of trees (too many), and scotts valley, tons of trees, 11,000 people.
we have about 6 to 8 months of summer, sometimes about 10 months of summer. it seems.
scotts valley is between two world famous race tracks, both about 1 hour away, and thunder hill about 3 hours.
rennsport, werks, and about 20 other historic events are here, close by, all the time.
when hwy 1 is open, the drive to LA is a dream, for luftgekuhlt and the lit show and the open houses. hwy 101 is 5+ hours of driving.
there is canepa, (canepa calls it paradise) and about 6 other guys restoring and working on cars...all within walking distance or 5 miles away.
there are a lot of mountain roads and the coast road....there is traffic when you leave the area. and you have to time it right.
it is very very expensive, i think.
