    RIP Timo Makinen

One of the flying Finn's has died.

Makinen drove half of the fearsome Ouninpohja stage (Finland's 1000 Lakes Rally) with the bonnet of his Mini Cooper up after the retaining straps failed. "We did about 12 of the 25 kilometres like that," said Makinen. "I was third fastest, even though I could hardly see where I was going - the drag was terrible too. "I kept trying to put my head out of the window, but the crash helmet was too big! I threw the car sideways this way and the other to try and get a view from the side windows."

What a great inspiration to all keen young Rally Drivers.

The Castrol Film the 'Flying Finns' inspired us all to smash up the gearboxes on our Mini Copper S Rally cars learning how to left Foot Brake and change gear without using the clutch.

We then moved into Escort Twin Cams as he made the RAC Rally his own in these cars.

My abiding memory, however, will be of him driving the Big Healey on the RAC Rally in 1965. He was driving through the Forests in thick fog at bewildering speeds and Pace Notes had been banned that year.

I was not old enough to drive at the time but at 17 bought my first car and entered my first competitive rally a month after passing my driving test.

The Rally was 200 miles long and started at 11.00pm at night in the Welsh Hills. We won the 'Beginners Class' despite having hit a tree with the Driver's Door and I had to use the car by getting in through the passenger side for months until we learnt how to mend the thing.

I still 'blame' Makinen for creating the desire to drive rally cars which lasted for nearly 50 years and kept me impoverished.

I watched him drive for many, many years with awe and envy.

    RIP

I grew up very close to several of the famous RAC special stages and used to go to watch him and other the other rally stars hammer past in RS Escorts and other rally cars of era. Made quite an impression.
