Red face Stupid things we've done....

Or things that make you smack your own forehead.....

    I'll start (I got'a million'of'm)

    My last traffic ticket:
Driving on Mulholland HWY with a Porsche friend in back of me... Came up to the Cornell Cyn. stop sign in back of a 'cafe bike'. M.H. is nice and straight after the stop sign... however JUST before proceeding a duelly with a horse trail turns onto M.H. in the same direction..... So, with no other cars around I 'step out' over the double yellow, and wonder why the hell the cafe bike is still tucked in behind the trailer..... Far too late I notice, on the other side of the road, under a tree, in a white SUV, the Chipper.... All he did was turn on his lights, smiled, and pointed to the shoulder.... Wrote me up for the double yellow..... Duh

Here's the pisser, it's a one point ticket I can take care of with 'school' ... HOWEVER ... This ticket won't 'clear' for 18 months (between schools) until Sept. '18 and I'll be 69 !!!!!!!...

I don't know about you guys but I don't worry too much about getting 'the' ticket.... I worry about the 'next ticket' I can't take care of.....

I smacked my forehead pretty good on this one.............

Last summer I went on a 2 week fishing trip and was responsible for "frozen " food.
The whole duration I was certain I had purchased 4 frozen chickens and was proven correct when I returned home to find my car ruined by 2 weeks of various states of Blow Fly gestation.
My Insurance Co said it was one of the more unusual claims they had processed but I lost my "No Claims Bonus".
I continue to do the "Homer Simpson" forehead slap over that.

    Red face

I can't even imagine the smell Mark .... Whoa !!!!

OK, here's one... (hope I haven't posted this before)

It's 1969, I'm a 20 year old dumbass kid that just bought a '59 Alfa Giulietta spider from by buddy Hector for $600.
Being a Giulietta it didn't come with windwings (vent windows) fixed or otherwise... However, the windshield frame was already tapped for some AMCO aftermarket plastic windwings... so.... I pick the right ones up for the car and proceed to attach'm.......... so..... I'm wondering why the first screw is being so stubborn go'n.... so..... I persist screwing not realizing that the 'universal supplied hardware' wasn't universal to all cars......... in the next instant (still try'n to rotate the screwdriver) I heard ... then saw.... the CRACK I just created in my own windshield.... As you guessed (maybe 8 sentences ago) the supplied screws were two long....

.....trust that I'm not proud of this....

Of course the crack stayed the 6 1/2 years I owned the car...
With me trying to avoid those late '60's early '70's CA. CHP equipment checks ... but that's another story

For those who weren't around or have forgot, here's what they looked like.....

    Not wrong there Chuck,

My mother told me to never count my chickens until they hatch,,
She should have taught me to count my frozen ones when I unpack !!.
The one that had rolled under the front passenger seat created such a stink and mess that the Audi required a total interior replacement down to the headliner. Excluding seats (leather) dash and door cards.
    $10 chicken caused $10K damage

Chicken story reminds me. A friend ( not me) once spilt milk in the boot ( trunk) of his pride and joy hatchback when we were teens. Tipped over on return from shop. Never ever got the smell out of the car from all the crevases the milk found once liberated from the carton.

Picking up on Chuck's windshield theme, I did my part back in January to contribute to doing something STOOPID to one of our cars (worse yet, it was the wife's car....).

Back in January, I was in a hurry to get some new windshield wipers on the wife's Q7 (at her request) the night before we were heading up to the lake. We were having some nasty Chicago weather that week, and we were expecting freezing rain the next day so she was nervous about the cruddy wipers. So it's 9pm, and as I'm feversihly removing the old wipers blades, I left one of the wiper arms up (without the blade on it). But being in such a hurry to swap them out, I accidentally knocked the wiper arm with my elbow, slamming it back down on the glass (without the wiper blade attached, of course), leading to a ginormous football-sized spiderweb crack, followed rapidly by a string of expletives from me. So what should have been a 10 minute job and $40 worth of new wipers turned into an entirely new windshield and an equally painful interaction with my insurance company.

Not enough time and space here to list all of mine but this Porsche boner comes to mind when I was a lad.

When I was working for my dad and still in high school (no; I was not in my 20's...), motivated by boredom and competition I decided to take a run at a new personal best on a 914 clutch job. Keep in mind back then we would do those on a regular basis so it wasn't like it was my first rodeo.

Start to finish in 45 minutes. I was feeling pretty full of myself until I started the motor and oil started gushing out.

I remembered to remove the old flywheel seal but in my haste forgot to install a new one.

    Lesson learned.

DOH!! Smack head. I put a new motor in a 1970 Mercedes back in the day. (Lots of work) and left out the rear seal as well. For some reason the oil didnt stay in that one either.

    Sooooo...

It's Rennsport/Treffen in Sept 2015. My wife and I had driven across country with 4 other air-cooled 911s to attend. While driving from the Treffen hotel to another local hotel to pick up our Rennsport tickets I noticed my left blinker doing the rapid-fire blinking thing...indicating one of my blinker light bulbs was out. I thought I had solved the problem months prior by putting a small blob of solder on the left rear blinker bulb thereby making the bulb fit snugly into the socket. But now it was acting up again. I parked and went inside to get my tickets. When I came out I turned the key ON and engaged the left blinker. At the rear of the car I gave the left tail light lens a quick whack to get that bulb working again...just as I had done many times before I fixed it with the solder. Weeeell...it was kinda cool that morning...and the plastic was made in 1988...and I used my knuckle instead of the palm of my hand...annnnnd the damn lens just shattered! To make matters worse a gentleman was walking past me as I did all this and said something in a thick German accent that I could only interpret as "nice going, idiot".

The icing came the following day after I had a replacement Bosch lens sent from Pelican overnight. While I oh-so-carefully tightened each screw I ended up going just a wee bit too tight on one and cracked my brand new, over-nighted, now close to $200 freakin lens!!!!!!!!

    Arrrrrgg...
