Here now a compilation of Porsche Crests within factory brochures and dealer issued documents, 1963 - 1973.
I have over 500 items so the survey might be complete.

    1963, 901 Brochure, German/RoW market.
It shows no crest but the Strenger designed Porsche typo (which differs from how Porsche is written on the Crest)

    1970 Pricelist, Switzerland
By 1970, most of the RoW market was distributed by the new joint company, VW-Porsche.
This pricelist is still using both logos, but usually the Porsche Crest completely disappears from all ads, literature etc and only VW-Porsche is seen on all pricelists, brochures etc.

    1972 Pricelist, Switzerland
The swiss importer, amag, was both importer of VW and Porsche.
He printed his own pricelist and looks like he choose still the Crest, even everybody did now use or was obliged to use the VW-Porsche logo only.
(Dealer would sometimes afterward stamp VW-Porsche literature with their own stamps, which still listed only Porsche).

1971 Porsche Audi fact book, USA
By 1970, in the US the Porsche importer name was changed to Porsche-Audi and as with VW-Porsche, the single Porsche name as well as the crest totally disappeared from official literature or press, replaced by Porsche Audi
Note also that below its written Porsche Audi itself is now a division of Volkswagen of America Inc.

Here two (rare) aftermarket brochures, selling essentially the same items as the factory, some from other brands. Including crests and decals.

Impressive array of literature Karim. I am not a collector but just have mainly 72/3 plus a few other years things that somehow came my way over the years, but are probably surplus to my requirements

Point taken that there is considerable variation in design of crest seen, sometimes that could be attributable to the materials ( paper, cotton etc) and limited colour range and other variation down to laissez-faire and brand-promotional work done locally rapidly growing international network.

Skimming the things posted above that seem to use a more full colour spectrum (rather than two colour) might there be a something in the seven colours. Particularly when looking at what team senior personnel and drivers wore back in the day. Having said that there are a number quite early ones that use a design like the one said to be 917 example in the early post. A design I would have previously assumed was later variation crest added afterwards if I'd seen it on a pre 73 car.

I've never really noticed or thought about this crest thing until Haul questioned why one of three otherwise same racing jackets I believed were all from 1973 catalogue had one different crest. What Haul thought was was a "later" crest. However looking at the range of designs across the thread that you he and others kindly shared, it maybe isn't later maybe it's just a different but still from that era? Or could be design continued into later era? Who knows.

Not being an Automobilia or literature collector or expert I'm unsure where I was going strting this thread but as you have suggested it seems that wasn't heavily controlled marketing image globally -- unlike what we see at Porsche and many other brand / image aware corporations these days. Makes it all the more curious when old looking stickers said to be original genuine can go for big money at places like Ladenburg and other sales.

Just want to thanks to you, Haul and other posters for the thoughtful efforts in building up a reference with provenance in response to my little question, even if it is not conclusive/ clear.

Steve, i agree and as i wrote earlier, from what i can assume back then there wern't such strict laws of copyrights.
I assume, in Europe any owner wanting an item for this very expensive cars just wrote to the factory and got what they offered.
The US market probably was the only place in the world where a true aftermarket existed and they were far ahead of anybody, especially California (three times as much as dealer adresses as other states) and its driving hot rod scene.
One can see flipping those brochures that those aftermarket items were sometimes true to its originals and sometimes less..and for Porsche it was free publicity and identification with their products, as they also did with racing.

We should put in perspective the time back then and being Porsche a very small car manufactor, much much smaller than GM, Ford, Chrysler, Fiat, VW or Opel..and also smaller (and younger) than Shell, Coca Cola or BP.
