Here's what black letters and numbers look like after 45 years. Silver/gray with a hint of purple.

Agree, anodised black for all 2.4litre models, as other said. Can turn with time into a patinated blackish purple or even silver/grey/black emblem shade.
2.2l were the last models having the option/standard of silver (standard on 911T, not available on 911E&911S) or gold letters (standard on 911E&911S, optional for 911T) this badge color distinction for equipment (T, E, S) regardless of any car's color was discontinued for Model Year 1972 2.4litre and later.
If a 2.4litre has "pure" silver or gold letters, it stems from a older restoration or owner's taste, but its not period correct.
Has been discussed before w many period pics.

While we are on the subject of Black Anodized 72-73 letters and numbers, has anyone had theirs re-Anodized? Wondering if I you would go for Black or try to mimic the faded look with a lighter black? I can see the guy at my anodizing shop right now trying not to roll his eyes while explaining this to him. LOL.

I just painted mine Wurth Satin Black, and I believe there is a colour that approximates the grey/purple hew that the black eventually fades to. Can anyone recall the paint code, I saw it posted somewhere ?
I perused all the paint colors for domestic car touch-up at my local Pep Boys, I found a sort of titanium grey that looked very much like a perfectly faded set of black letters.

letters black
911 badge and grill black anodized
I have different black letters here. Most are black anodized in several Patina stages from black to purple, but at least 1/3 of the sets are not anodized and patinaed.
Had there been a change to just black painted letters in the 70th?
