Thread: Why Weidman?

    Why Weidman?

Just thought I would share my experience. Not sure the photos will illustrate the details very well, but it should give the idea.

I recently had a couple wheels restored by a relatively new shop that's been discussed here on the board. I've always had my wheels done by Harvey, but figured that with his backlog, I would try another option. What I got back were pretty, but not accurate at all. In the photos below, you will see the Harvey wheel on the car, an original wheel to the right and the restored wheel to the left.

The first thing I noticed was that the paint on the restored wheel was not a matt finish like the original but instead a chalky flat finish. It filled my garage with what smelled like barbecue paint. The other big problem is that the finish on the sides of the spokes and the barrel part of the rim are the exact same polished finish as the face of the spokes and the rim. The original wheel of course had more of a raw finish beneath the anodizing on the sides of the spokes and the barrel of the rim which Harvey replicates nicely.

The workmanship of the restored wheel seemed very good, but like I said was totally inaccurate. For a driver quality car it would probably be just fine, but I was assured that it would be Concours correct and indistinguishable from my other wheels...which it wasn't. Luckily Harvey was gracious enough to redo the wheels correctly, but I was still out a big chunk of money.

As Violet Fane said in 1892
"All things come to those that wait"

Weidman is obviously an 'artist" and this is yet another case in point.

Harvey is undoubtedly the best, but the lack of communication is hard to overcome. I tried emails and multiple calls but was never even able to speak to him or get a reply. Maybe he only has a selected list of clients or just does special cars.
I saw the wheels he did for an RS and they were spectacular.

Harvey has done all the wheels on my 4 projects...Martini RSR, Kremer ST, Toad Hall ST, 3.0 RS...and they are all works of art. I never tire looking at them. They really 'make' a project almost by themselves... a statement that you are serious about this 911.

The thrill of the "quick turnaround" and "great price" are soon forgotten as the attention to detail and promised quality quickly evaporate upon delivery.
I have no Hart or respect for some "newbies" trying to dilute the market.

+1, and with other resources who for me have done perfectly acceptable work (wheels and other things), I'll pass on the difficulty to chase 'perfect'.

Sure is a nice car Nick! Wonder who built it? You should do a thread on it.
