    911 acceleration comparison

    Guys, A Physics/Calculus word problem:

    Porsches says that the 911 Carrera accelerates to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and the Carrera S gets to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, a difference of .3 seconds.

    But what is the difference in feet (furlongs) when the Carrera S hits 60 mph?

    If both cars start at the same time, when the faster Carrera S hits 60 mph, how far behind is the plain Jane Carrera? The thickness of a rear view mirror glass?

    My wallet can tell the 14 thousand base price difference and the seat of my pants has no trouble telling me the .3 second difference.

    But what would my eyes see?

    Thank you. I would have paid attention in Calculus class, but... well you know that story.

    26.4ft (0.3 x 1/60 miles) x miles to ft conversion = multiply by 5280

    distance = 0.5 * average acceleration * time^2
    average acceleration = (final velocity - initial velocity) / time

    rearrange the equations and you have

    distance = 0.5 * (final velocity - initial velocity) * time

    so, the difference is 0.5*(60mph*5280ft/mile/3600s/hr)*0.3s=13.2ft

    Guys,

    Thanks for the help. A bit of an over simplification, I suppose, but am I being too cynical if I say that it sounds like $14k gets you less than a car length (and 20 inch wheels).
