What month was your car made? The reason I ask is my car was made Jan. of 1972, and through a prior post it was determined that the Fuchs that were being put on the January cars were dated only a couple weeks prior to production of the car. So my Fuchs would have been dated most likely January of 1972 since my car was a late January build. And the spare would have been dated somewhere between November of 71 and January of 72. Because of course the spares came off a different palette. Yes I'm probably muddying the waters a bit, but if you really want to be obsessive, this is a good way to do it.

    my car is 1/72 build.

the spare in the car is a 1970 date. Steel 5.5.

the spare would appear to be too old to be correct?

Yes I would think so but the discussion we had was over Fuchs. Harvey said that the spares came off a different palette therefore they could have been dated older than the set that was on the car. Obviously the dates meant nothing to Porsche. If Porsche had a large stock of Steel Wheels then I suppose it would be possible that they could have been dated well before the production of car. I would think that that might be too early but maybe you should start a thread on dating of original Steel Wheels on cars. If you can find a couple others that have a similar situation that would give you your answer.

would it be common for the date code on the spare wheel to be older then the car?

Yes. Apparently it was not uncommon that the spare had a different date than the ones that were on the car. Since the spare was put in at a different time and place at the factory they would have gone through four pallets of wheels to every one pallet of spares.
