Buying a car from the other side of the world is fraught, and I would suggest that the buyer is the vulnerable party.
I completely understand Franks point of view, and would be more than happy to put a deposit down to show good faith.

However some of the cars that I have pursued have been advertised elsewhere and even establishing the bona fides of the seller can be difficult.

I would always expect to pay for a PPI and I would use a third party.

Now, who can look at a '68 Camaro in Kansas for me?

No doubt Chris! Post an off topic thread on this forum and see what you get. 914world.com has a ton of members, and I'll bet you can find someone in Kansas to scope out that 68

How's the 914world crowd? It would certainly be nice to spar with guys who appreciate our red-headed step children.

Is humor a 4 letter word there? Are they flip phone 356registry type people?

Generally speaking, one of the most down-to-earth, fun-to-banter-with forums in all of Porschedom—though there were some hints of snobbery a bit ago with much handwringing over an unsanctioned engine transplant (in a 914!), a first sign that things are getting "serious" even in the 914 world. On the other hand, they're mirthfully building a two-top, two-bar 914 limo, which I figure balances out just about anything.

Did you note the time of your post? Was that done on purpose or just a coincidence?

    Regards

Over the years I have purchased many cars from oversea's sellers. We just dont have the population to create a deep 'classic car' pool here in New Zealand.
Living down here creates a very simple set of 'base' rules that I have always followed.
Always be polite to the seller, I am going to need them in assisting transport pre shipping to NZ.
If a car is 'panning' out and a deposit is asked for, agree on an amount and pay it.
It should not be taken for granted that a seller will accomodate you with PPI 's and test drives if one is not paid.
Some sellers at times have less knowledge than myself regarding what they are selling, never hold this against them, in fact i always inform a seller of my findings from PPI's regardless if I purchase or not. They are almost always delighted for the enlightenment given and on occasion I have had sellers that I have not bought from contact me months later regarding another car that someone they know is wanting to sell.
Being RHD here in NZ I have in the past purchased vehicles out of the UK and I always facilitate a seller as I require really detailed inspections and never has a seller denied me of my needs.
The last car from the UK was a genuine Ford Mexico that the 'dealer' advertised as immaculate and it appeared so from the numerous pictures and info he provided. I got the PPI done and the inspector could not fault the car on 98% of its inspection points. The dealer asked me "why' I had it done but understood the importance of a purchaser's need when they are unable to view. He could not have assisted me more "post sale' delivering to the shipping agent personally and he still is in contact with me to this day.
The last car I purchased was a 911 out of the US and I had NO 3rd party inspection done at all. Solid conversations with a seller who turned out to be a forum member and an ex New Zealander living San Diego way was enough to eliminate my fears and I was and am still overjoyed with what was received.
Being Up front, honest, respectful and polite seems to always work for me and Im sure Mark Allen would vouch for that.
Yeah its a process and yes most of the cars are "junk' but a bit of consideration appears to go a long way, this day and age.

What Stout said! There's a great bunch of guys there, many who could have whatever car they want, and they do value humor too

I can personally attest to there being some very angry guys on the 914 forums!
