Are you certain that this is a 911L?
The 4th digit in this serial number would indicate a 911S chassis.

While the early 68 model crankcase was still aluminum, a transition to magnesium had begun.
The 68 chain housings were now magnesium, with 2 additional fastening points, and the housing covers had 10 and 11 fastening points compared to the previous 6.
The 68 valve covers were also magnesium, with the lowers having 11 fastening points compared to the previous 6.

The fourth digit in the U.S. 911L is a “0” just like the S. The ROW 911L is a different digit. Aluminum cases were used until late October early November. His car sounds correct. I would love to see photos.

The fifth digit which just happens to be a “5” is the designated number used to identify it as a U.S. delivered 911L. The last three digits is the sequential number 001-449. Only 449 made.

    OK, apparently so, thanks.
The factory code chart doesn't indicate that, but the serial number lists show the 911L USA Coupé beginning at 11805001.

My '68L coupe (now yellow) is 11805385 invoiced 6/21/1968. Must have built a bunch in July. All US-spec. 1968 911Ls (11805###) were built at Porsche, while standard 1968 911 coupes were built at both Karmann (11835###) and Porsche (11830###).
