How is a 64-65 shift lever different than a 67? Always willing to learn................

    Hey Jim,

Not that I know anything, but didn't the earlier shifters "break/bend back" about an inch above the point where the rod leaves the boot, where the later type "break/bend back" right at the point where they leave the boot. I know that my early 912 has a high break shifter.

Dan is right. Jim, I consider it an honor that I was able to share a new fact. (Not kidding, I really respect your knowledge of our cars).

Look for the kink, the early cars have it higher up, like in the owners manual. Later ones. . . down low.

this one has an engine that appears to end in 092 and certainly does not look like it ending in 492 or 592. Therefore I would be very cautious about the "numbers matching " claim
If we had the engine build # we could determine the serial #.

96047x was the original engine, not something ending in 092.

Very interesting. I would argue that the shifter on the right is from a 914 except it has threads for the screw-on shift knob which put it in the "SWB" era. I'm pretty sure that the boot around the shifter is a 914 part and not from a 911, though. I guess I have always assumed that all early 911/912 shifters look like they have come from a very serious accident due to all the twists and bends. I'm going to have to pay more attention in the future.
