Here's an overall view of the driver's side mirror from a '69 coupe and an enlargement of the logo on the passenger's side mirror from the same car.

Well, it seems like I have started a spirited debate on mirrors. I didn't do that on purpose but I am now convinced that the mirror in question is real. I was shooting from the hip and should have looked more carefully. The 2 pictures I have posted are of a real mirror and a very bad repro. Most repros are better than this. Often, the stars are in the correct spot but don't point at the correct letters.

    Regards

    Jim

Man, I LOVE this place!! You guys are great, now, don’t let that go to your heads Yes Jim, you did start a spirited discussion. I am appreciating the education along the way. Honestly I had no idea in the number of nuances on mirrors! I can see more clearly now. Thanks to everyone.

So, what’s the verdict on this one? Good or no good? The one star looks terrible now that I look at it closely, and they definitely don't point to the A's, if that's THE tell.

I pulled it off my ‘68. I was going to try and restore it. Some of the internals were rusty to where it wouldn’t adjust. It *was* adjustable at some point if that makes a difference...

If it’s not original, where can I buy a proper one at hopefully a decent price?

The mirror probably got "upgraded" along with the hood badge at some point over the last 50 years.

I have the same one in my stash of parts, if it is a reproduction then it is a good one and it is over 30 years old. I think it might be a second mfg. run by Porsche.

Yes, Mike, that's exactly what my base looks like too. Do you have a picture of all of the guts?

I was going to try and source/reproduce some of the destroyed, rusty pieces. If it's not original, I wasn't going to bother anymore.

911sc & Mike (as well as anyone else looking) I have another mirror identical to the one I posted pics of EXCEPT it needs a mirror, which I understand aren’t that hard to have made?? PM me if interested and I’ll send you pics. I’ll post in for sale if I don’t get any responses in the next couple of days.

OK, here I go again. That mirror is a repop. 100% certain. Yes, it is an early repop (probably from the late 70 or early to late 80s) and uses the "stationary bolt". The stars do not point to the As and they are not encircled by the "Made in Germany". Notice the points on the stars. They are elongated just like the earlier "Aero" and "Ponto Stabil" mirrors. All the Durant mirrors have stars with shorter points and point at the "A"s more or less. I believe that the people that did the first repops (Tasker Metal Products) took the logo from an earlier mirror and copied it pretty well as far as the stars go. Unfortunately, the stars had changed shape by then or there could have been some conscious effort to modify the logo to avoid infringement troubles. The early versions of Repop Durant mirrors both the small and larger version were pretty good and I have sold 100s of them. I won't sell the current ones, though.

    Regards

    Jim

I bought a couple mirrors on the recommendation of someone else on these forums that had precut glass in the correct size. I only had to pop the glass out of the new mirrors and install it in the Durants. I'll check this weekend when I'm at my shop and post the maker and part number.
