    118.1.0429 H.Wetson - B.Jennings - T.Adamowicz information needed

    Dear all,

I do have collected few information about 118.1.0429.
I know this is a 911 L 1968 with the rally kit, Sport Kit and sport engine (308.0088) 901/30 with Weber 40ids, with gearbox 901/72.
The car was raced by the 3 gentlemen in various US races and got quite a palmares, from 1969 to 1971.
As some of you may know, I have the ambition to build an exact same car, nut and bolt, whatever the time and effort it will take.

That said, after having collected many literature around the stock 1968 911 L (many thanks to some of you), I start to seek collectible/information about this specific race car : pictures, printing, magazines, reports, technical bulletin, etc..

    All th best.
    Xavier

    Xavier:

I know not the car, but do know that Tony Adamowicz is on both LinkedIn and on Facebook and posts a great deal.
He periodically runs pictures and makes comments about his race history , and think you would find a most helpful gentleman and a valid resource of all things relating to his days with Porsche.
Perhaps you may start there in that direction, and source him for what he may know, have pictures of, or just be an authenticating source for your project.
Best Wishes on the tribute car !

The car is so nice, beautiful, a pure race car to my eyes, respectful of what is a 911, in its soul and shape.

I confirmed today, that is the car pictured. I talked to Gerry McCarthy, who knows the car very well, this is what he said,
"Yes, that is the car stan and I built, at P cars, for herb. special parts and design by mac tilton, as part of deal in buying the 1968 championship car, raced by Adamowicz."

    1968 Porsche 911L FIA Group 2

The Porsche Factory records for this car are complete from initial order and construction, through delivery and include period and contemporary correspondences up to the present.

The first line of the original Porsche Factory “KARDEX” or “Build Sheet” (copy on file) identifies this 911 as a normal 1968 production 911L model for export and sale to and through their Porsche of America Corporation “POAC” Teaneck, New Jersey distributorship. As such by chassis number alone this would have sequentially been the 429th of just 720 similar production coupes built. This should, could and would have been an otherwise normal road-going 911 near indistinguishable from the other similar 911L models built that year. It was however far from standard and by no means a normal production road car.

Chassis 11810429 was and remains and extremely unique FIA Group 2 homologated Rally/Race car. For the 1968 Season Porsche homologated through the FIA their new 911L for international racing. As such, they were able to offer select clients an extremely comprehensive list of “race-only” oriented options that could be ordered and fitted at the Factory or purchased individually through their worldwide dealer network. Only the handful of 911Rs built in 1967/68 were lighter and a bit more powerful than the 911L FIA GR2s. The problem with the 911R was that Porsche felt the design far too fragile and unreliable to be a production racecar. As such the 911R was never homologated and relegated as such to being forced to run in the prototype classes when raced.

Because the original records, period and contemporary Porsche Factory documentation and correspondences for chassis 11810429 are so complete, we have an impossibly perfect understanding of how this car was originally ordered, built, delivered and raced when new.

In the late Fall of 1967, the well know East Coast Porsche Racer, Herbert (Herb) Wetson of Hewellet Bay, New York placed an order for this Porsche directly through the Teaneck, New Jersey, Porsche North America Distributorship. Wetson specifically wanted a fully race prepared FIA GT class, 2.0-liter racecar with which to enter and race at the upcoming opening Season race at Daytona.

Wetson was well known in the Porsche racing community and as such was able to get financial support from the fledgling Porsche America Race Team which in fact had both direct support from POAC and the Porsche Factory. He was given additional sponsorship from Goodyear Tire, Ferodo, STP, Bosch, Quaker State and several other Motor Sport related companies that would assist him in the upcoming Season.

Wetson’s order was processed via POAC and handled by the Porsche Factory in a very special way. This was in fact one of the unique and now nearly legendary “Sonderwunsche” or “Special Wish” vehicles and identified clearly as such on the original Porsche “KARDEX” notation section. The Porsche race department under Special Project code “064” handled the assembly and completion of this car.

Wetson was well aware that only the 911L and not the 911R had been granted homologation status for FIA international racing and specifically requested a “light-racing coupe with highest performance engine.” Under Porsche’s “Sport Kit” option list of “go-fast” components, Wetson specifically ordered his car with the following features:

    -Light Ivory Exterior

    -Lightweight Black Interior

    -Sport Kit

    -Rally Kit

    -Competition Engine for maximum performance*

-100 liter competition fuel tank with central “through-the-bonnet” quick-fill cap

-80% limited slip differential (901/72 Racing Gearbox)

    -Leather wrapped steering wheel

-16mm front and rear stabilizing bars

    -Roll Bar

    -Porsche body side lettering

    -6-inch competition alloy Fuch wheels**

    -Suspension lowered for race/rally use

*Done under Porsche Option Code “Rep. Nr. 70-702.” The original engine fitted to this car “388 0008” is one very important clue to the unique nature and race preparation given to this car while being assembled. This was one of just 28 Porsche Factory Type 901/30 FIA homologated Group 2 “Rally” engines built for the 1968 race season. As indicated by the individual engine number this would have sequentially been the 8th example built in this small production run. The type 901/30 engine used the best components from Porsche’s extensive racing parts bin. The main changes were the fitting of titanium connecting rods, fiberglass wrapped cylinder-head studs, cylinder heads with larger intake and exhaust valves, camshafts with a different profile, raised compression ratio pistons, 46mm rather than 40mm triple-choke, Weber, down-draft carburetors, open velocity stacks with rain-shields, separate front-mounted, oil-cooler and a “Sport-Kit” free-flowing set of headers and exhaust resonator. All of this was good for a substantial increase in both horsepower as well as usable torque. Some mysteries however still remain and to what extent beyond the base configuration of the type 901/30 engine option packaged fitted to this car are not exactly known. The KARDEX / Porsche Records simply reflect the original order for the car stating “competition engine for maximum performance.”

**Replaced with 7-inch “Mini Light” Wheels prior to the 1970 race season.

Wetson’s Porsche 911L would on the face of it seem a bit of an oddity. For the 1968 production year there were just two 911 models available for clients in the States, The base model 911 and the 911L. For the US market, the “L” was essentially the Rest of the World marketed 911S but with standard non-vented disc brakes. The loop-hole rule that allowed the “European” version of the 911L to run FIA International races in Group 2 was the main reason Wetson’s car was ordered and built the way it was.

In a day and age of easy, instant information we are far better able look back nearly 45 years ago to understand just how incredibly important and rare such a Porsche GT racecar was. For comparison, the legendary 911R was built along very similar lines with many shared components. The main difference being the extreme light-weight approach to the 911R. The downside however being that the “R” was never homologated and therefore forced to always run in the Prototype Class when racing. The 1967 911T/R and 1968 911L FIA GR2 and 1969 911S models therefore became the mainstay in FIA endurance racing well into the 1973 Season when 911s of 2.2.-2.4, 2.5, 2.7 and 2.8 liters began to take over the “GT” class in international racing.

Over the Winter of 1967/1968, Wetson’s car was assembled in the Porsche Factory Race Department. It was finally completed on February 9th, 1968 and after testing and sorting, delivered to Wetson in the States.

For the 1969 Season opening race, The Porsche America Race Team (PART) arranged for a three-car entry in the 8th running of the 24 Hours of Daytona schedule for February 2nd and 3rd, 1969.

Driver pairings for the three cars entered were as follows:

    Number Drivers Start Postion Results

Car No. 20 Bruce Jennings / Tony Adamowicz / Herb Wetson 28th 4th OA / 1st in Class

Car No. 21 Jim Netterstrom / John Kelley 39th DNF

Car No. 22 Bob Bailey / James Locke / Mike Downs 47th DNF

The pairing of Jennings / Adamowicz and owner, Wetson was a perfect match. All three cars were entered in the 2.0-liter FIA GT class and now all sported new “Mini Light” 7-inch, alloy-wheels and Goodyear tires. Only the Wetson car was a newly built FIA GR/2, 911L rally/race example. The other two team cars were client built converted 911s and carried both a weight penalty as well as being down significantly on power. With only minor issues our subject vehicle not only finished 1st in Class but an incredible 4th Overall!

This is an incredible finish after 24 Hours of flat-out racing. Even more impressive is the fact that this car and driver pairings beat out a veritable fleet of Porsche’s own Sports Prototypes. No fewer than four 908 as well as numerous 906 and 910s and a lone 907 were left behind on their way to victory. The first three spots taking the podium were all Factory supported, five plus-liter engined racers, leaving our subject vehicle the top finishing GT entered racer.

The incredible finish at Daytona was no fluke. Less than two months later at the 12 Hours of Sebring, chassis 11810429 was driven to 13 th Overall and 2nd in Class! Bruce Jennings once again led the driver line-up but was joined this time by Bob Bailey and future car owner, Jim Locke. Only the professional Swiss Porsche Team, Wicky Racing with driver Larousse, Wicky and Sage finishing ahead in class. The other top finishers were all pure Sports Prototypes or 5-liter class cars.

11810429 would continue to race over the next two Seasons including two more runs at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1970 and 1971 as well as two races at Watkins Glenn in 1969 and 1971. One of the car’s final race highlights came at Sebring in 1971 when the car was now some three years old. Driver Bert Everett and owner driver, Jim Locke at the 1971 running of the 12 Hours of Sebring, the two took an incredible 9th Overall and 1 st in Class finish. The only entries finishing ahead of the two were all direct Factory Supported 3.0 and 5.0-liter Sports Prototypes including Alfa Romeo Tipo 33s, Porsche 917s and Ferrari 512Ms and 312PBs.

Sometime in late January, early February of 1970, Wetson agreed sell this Porsche to Jim Locke. A crash at the 1970 running of the 24 Hours of Daytona required an extensive rebuild. After the crash, Locke had the car returned to his shop for repairs. The front left fender and pedal box assembly were completely replaced using sheet metal from a donor 1966 Porsche 912 (s/n 454879.) Both period photos of the Daytona accident as well as signs of the repair can be seen today. Work continued on this Porsche for the remainder of the 1970 Season. The repairs were however completed in time for the car to run the three main FIA East Coast Championship races of the 1971 Season. These saw the car finishing 9th Overall each time at the 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring and the 6 Hours of Watkins Glenn. At each of these races, this Porsche consistently took a podium class finish without fail.

After the 1971 Race Season, this Porsche was fortunately spared the fate of most of its counterparts. Rather than being upgraded for IMSA/Trans Am races with wide-body work and tube frame attachments, Locke put the car into long-term storage in a semi-disassembled state where it would remain for the next 18 years undisturbed. In December of 1989, Locke agreed to the sale and trade of the car to Michael McComas in Pampa Texas (please see original bills of sale and correspondences.) Less than a year later, Porsche dealer, Jeff Kreiner in Orlando, Florida was able to purchase this vehicle. He in turn sold it in 1993 to East Coast, Porsche Collector and Racer, Steven Marshall. Marshal raced the car regularly over the next five years until the well known Porsche historian, Weldon Scrogham in Waynesboro, Virginia acquired the car.

This past Fall in November of 2009, this Porsche became part of a three-way trade. We are extremely fortunate that as a result of that transaction, for the first time ever, this Porsche is now being offered for public sale.

After some very extensive research, this is now believed to be the only complete and proper surviving, fully restored and documented example of its type left in the world. All original records and documents detailing the above narrative, race and ownership history will accompany this vehicle when sold. All interested buyers are welcome to have this Porsche fully inspected to their satisfaction without restriction of any kind.

Hi brakekiller--Ther is a article about this car in EXCELLENCE magazine October 2011. The pictures show how it looked back in the day. I think the best car to star with would be a ROW 911L Vin# 1181xxxx. Hope you find one of the 720 made. I have one of the 720. chris
