    My 1968 911

I am new to this site but not new to Porsche cars having owned a Porsche shop for 36 years and being in the business for over forty years. So my question is the VIN number on my 6/68 karmann coupe is 11835532 The forth digit is a 3 so is it a S or not ? There seems to be some confusion as the 911 S was not brought into the USA in 1968 This was a special order car VW Pacific Culver City CA by a John Turnbull could it be a S brought in to the USA under the radar

    11835532 is a 1968 911 non S non L non T, it's the "normal car".

    11 is for 911
    8 is for 1968
    35 is for Karmann shell
    538 is the 538th made (538/742)

the car is a A serie, A serie has few small differences from previous O serie but still is SWB.
    very interesting car indeed.

    TBC: engine should be a 2.0 130 Hp (901/06 (3080001 to 308655) with manual gearbox, 901/07 (3180001 to 3180347) if sportomatic

I had the same problem. Purchased a 68 911 “s” back in 1987 VIN 11835519. The car is badged as an S and the engine has a red cowl. The information available at the time indicated it could be an S even though none were shipped to the U.S. in 68. Now 31 years later after taking the car from storage, research confirms Jeager’s post, the car is a 911 Karmann body with a non S 1967 901/05 engine. There is definitely some confusion with the 68 vin numbers one site claiming the 4th digit of “3” designates the car as an S. That site stuttcars.com seems to be incorrect. Almost every other site confirms the fourth digit of “3” as a U.S. 911 normal. Currently I am in the process of re-badging and returning the car close to or orignal.

Yep, "3" at that fourth digit in the '68 VIN is "just" a 911 Normale Coupe. "0" (Coupe) and "5" (Targa) are the magic "S" numbers for 1968.

That "5" of yours is the FIFTH digit, indicating Karmann-produced...
