Thread: If you were to have a choice ..

If you were to have a choice ..

    2.2 S Targa or a 2.4 E coupe.

Which would you want. U can only pick one

For sake of discussion let us say both cars are equal condition, have a desirable color combination and factory installed options. I would like to hear opinions and glean information from current owners and the many learned folks here who have driven both. Thank you in advance and I am really looking forward to your answers.

I have heard stories about the targa flex and the rigidity of the coupe. Vehicle will never see the track nor will be driven anywhere close to its limit and will only be used purely for pleasure/enjoyment and experience of the marquee. To me the 2.2 S epitomizes the early 911 ethos but the 2.4 E which I have owned for 5 years is a one damn good car.

My feeling is if it is a part time car for pleasure and driven only in nice weather you want the top to come off. You can see what I have from my signature and my '71 Targa and 914-6 get most of the seat time, the 993 is to get my wife to ride with me.

Im a coupe guy but I do agree with Mike if you are only a fine weather driver, BUT,,, if it's a sunroof 2.4 E then it would have to be that as my choice.

What Mike said. We have both, but if the choice was based strictly on occasional fine-weather fun drives, top-off wins.

FWIW, one of my wife's daily commuters (even when it rains) is a '68 Targa. She truly loves it, even though it leaks a little bit.
Her other work transport is a '68 Merc 280SL which is dry and cozy, but she doesn't like to drive it in rain.

Having owned a 2.2S Targa, I can say that for your use the 2.4 is a better fit. The 2.2S was a very peaky motor, unless you drive it hard, or use it for long distance trips, you won't enjoy what it has to offer.
The 2.4E is way more tractable.

Appreciate the input so far. After owning something for 5 years I have the itch to look around. It is always daunting to go from a known well sorted example of an early car i.e. my E to another car far away that appears to be the holy grail .. I've always heard great things about a 2.2 S but again I love the S bumpers of the later cars and the real world usability of a E even in modern day traffic not to say that a 2.2 S would not be any less usable but I wonder about the 901 and the torque curve of the S.

    Uhhhhhhh . . .

    . . . think you need to go out and drive a 2.2 S + 901

Topless or not, there 'll be a LOT going on --- which 'll focus most of your attention . . .

To put it Another Way . . .

    . . . one person's 'pleasure/enjoyment' is another's 'torque-less/peaky/nightmare' . . .
