    Need education about 911 1965

    Hi guys,

I met a guy who wants to sell his 911, 1965 with original sunroof. The car can be driven but needs restoration, but the good news is that the car has verry little rust.

The chassisnumber starts with 3013 and was bult before the holidays in 1965.

Is this what we call a real 1965? I understand that cars built after juli are not real 1965?

    Thanks a lot!

A car with VIN 3013xx would certainly qualify as a 1965 model. It would have a 64xx paint code most likely. The knee pad under the dash is straight, not bent up into a wide U at the outboard ends. Somewhere about 302000 a few were built with 66xx paint codes and U shaped knee pads, and this ushered in the 1966 model year cars. There was a big range for the changeover and some RHD models still had the old knee pad with 66xx paint codes. The factory wanted all early 911 & 912 to be 1966 models but the many differences does delineate the model years for most enthusiasts. If the car does not have the factory Kardex, then I can assist getting one.

If the dash wood is set in aluminum and not beveled on the ends it is probably a 66 model also called a 65 by some who mistakenly think a 65 is a better car or want to get the price premium of a "real" 65.
