What is this on the front hood - 911SWB

    Greetings,

Just sharing a finding while googleing 911L 1968, a weird picture of a, as said, 911R (?): look at the front hood and air vent...??
Maybe known already but first sight for me - wonder what is it for.

It seems to be an experiment for getting better ventilation
the red 911R prototype 2 (306681) had two vents at Mugello in 1967 (Photo below) and later on had one vent as a rally car that you can see just next to one of the hood lights (bottom photo)

They obviously were not carried on the the "series production" 911R's or subsequent 911 cars so I suspect that they were a development dead end

Thank Hugh, very much. Prototypes of prototype

You are a "puit de science".

I was wondering why such an air intake would take place in an early911, maybe the very early air intake development to cool the brakes for the 991.2 GT3RS

    Take care.

There are more pictures of the car here, the fourth picture showing the interior has some extra venting. My guess is the duct is used to push more air at the driver.

The first three 911R prototypes were originally fitted with a fixed window on the driver and passenger side doors. They did have a smaller window within the fixed window that would open for fresh air. With such a small amount of fresh air supplied by the little windows the hood scoops were probably there to augment airflow to the driver.

On prototype 02 they ended up replacing the fixed window with the traditional 911R leather strap sliding window. One of those things that evolved and then went into production on the 20 production R's

Prototype 03 ran the fixed windows and no hood scoops. Maybe they decided the scoops created too much parasite drag and Vic would just have to sweat a little.

Very cool explanation and pictures, thank you gentlemen.
Prototypes of prototype (at the end) - funny to realise the R was supposed to run GT and at the end ended up in Prototype, based on prototypes.

The air intakes are really cool.

The air scoop was for the oil cooler. 911R prototype #1 used one front cooler. For the 20 series cars built, two front coolers were used.

A bit late to the party here, but can anyone supply the paint code for R2? Company literature says "Fire Red" but tracking down any sort of paint code has been unsuccessful. It seems this was the only Porsche ever painted this color. The Mercedes color DB534 seems quite close, if not exact.

Was R2 a "paint to sample" perhaps?

I'm also interested in the code for Gold Metallic associated with one or more of the production cars. Is it the same as the later 911 cars?
    Any info is appreciated. Thanks!
