Thread: Hella SWB U.S. Sealed Beam Headlights - Restored

John Audette, aren't these early H1's the same as the ones you sold to me recently? Alas, I still don't have a worthy car to put them on.

I have no idea. They all look pretty much alike.

Hey, anyone interested in these sealed beams?

Sorry to again interrupt Mr. Audette's mission to sell his ultra-rare headlight units.

It sure looks like you have the '65-'67 covered sealed beam units. Those weren't used on '68s. American '68 911Ls would have been the first cars to get "sugar scoops" (7 inch sealed beams without covers). Rest of World 1968 911s would have had [Covered] Euro Tungsten P45t headlights except for the 911S (after the first 291 cars). Those 911S cars came with H1 headlights. H1s should have been optional on other Rest of World 911s.

    Here's a table from a while ago:

Year Covered Sealed Beams Sugar Scoops [Covered] Euro Tungsten P45t H1s H4s
    1965-1967 USA 911-912 non USA 911-912
    1968 USA 911-912 non USA 911-912
    except 911S after
    Coupé 1180226 &
    Targa 1185065
    non*USA 911S after
    Coupé 1180226 &
    Targa 1185065
    1969 USA 911-912 non USA 912 non USA 911
    1970-1971 USA 911 non USA 911
    1972-1989 USA 911, 912E non USA 911

    What to do:

To get legal headlights for France

You just need 7 inch sealed beam headlights for driving on the right or 7 inch H4 replacements for sealed beams.

I don't know any French sources for 7 inch sealed beams but you should be able to find good 7 inch H4 replacements for sealed beams. There's:

    To get "correct" '68 headlights

If you want to keep your car as a "correct" USA version, the correct headlights are the "sugar scoops" I don't know a specific source but so many people have replaced them with H4s that an ad in the Parts Wanted forum has a good chance.

If you want to take your car to a "correct" Rest of World version you need either [covered] P45t "tungsten" headlights (which would have had yellow lenses in France) or H1s (which also would have had yellow lenses in France). I don't know a source of either.

    -----------------------------------

Personally, I'd just stick a set of Hella or Cibié H4 replacements in those headlights.

    Jim...

The sealed beams I have listed here are not ultra-rare. The early H1 lenses with the large fluting pattern are ultra-rare. The SWB U.S. are getting harder to find but I wouldn’t classify them as rare yet.

    Price Drop

OK, one more price reduction. I’m going to hold firm here and hold them until someone needs a set.

    $750.00

    Thanks,
    John
