Thread: 901/54 gearbox.

    COA Below which shows the number/type

    I checked base on a picture, I do have a trans case stamped 901/05, with SN 3282539, BUT COA shows 901/54 type (Special Nurburgring) which correspond to the currently ratio in the gearbox.

    This is the original transmission to my 911L 1968 confirmed by the Kardex and COA.
    Have read other articles on the bird about this, which seems to have the same questions.

    Am just curious.

    OK, the box is stamped '901/05' which is standard for a 911L, not '901/54'. I wouldn't put much stock in what the CoA says. Post up the Kardex.

    As for the ratios, you're going by "feel" alone. Anything could have been done to the trans in the last 50 years. Only way to know for sure is to pull the stack out. Since you're replacing the engine, might be a good time to see.

    Bill, I have asked my mechanic to do so. will see.
    Could it possible to have a 901/05 with an ordered 901/54 setup in ?

    Not that I WANT this to happen, but good exercice to dig in.

    About the COA, I know COA may contains errors, but back to this days, many things happened. Why on earth an operator would have put 54 instead of 02 or 05...

    Anyway, will see.

    The 3 things I've found in numbered special ratio gearboxes are, but not always: LSD's, 904 mainshafts and rarely 906 ring and pinions, distinguished by castle nut instead of stretch bolts pinion shaft fastener. G

    Great thread.

    Here is a picture of the 1st gear guide sleeve and castle nut as Gordon noted. The 1st gear guide is marked with a 906 number and has two cutouts for access to remove/install the cotter pin.
