very thin birch plywood sort of an angle cut at the end didn't fully fit into the puch in the carpeting. I'd send you a pic, but I used mine to get out of a ditch and never replaced it.

I understood that the wooden piece and the pocket it is in was deleted some time in 1973MY and only regular non reinforced carpet was used. That is because I have a very late production 1973 E and have put a carpet with the wood piece in it but was told at the time that it was not strictly correct. I would love to know for certain from anyone who can say for certain I am sure someone on the board knows.

    Good question Hugh....

I trust the 16 year old trunk carpet that was in my car when I bought it was original.... it was pretty toasted, but did have it's sewn sleeve and wood plank.

I've since replaced the carpet (twice) and made my own wood plank out of a piece of 1/8" Italian aircraft ply (something we had laying around the shop at work) and stained it black walnut.... looked very much like what was left of the original......

Again, mine is an April build '73......

My Italian delivered, late '73 "S" has no sewn sleeve and wood plank either ... I'd appreciate too if anybody has an idea on when the transition happened ...

The RS book says on page 116 that from may 15 1973 "no pocket or wooden panel for luggage compartment mat". However I am not sure if this was across all cars or only RS cars on that day. We do know that for some components such as the AG KG change on the aluminum data plates the RS's changed at a different date to other cars. however for this change I would think it may have applied across the model range at the same time. However I have never been able to get any other confirmation than the RS book reference

I guess my car was produced in the first 2 weeks of May since I had a plank.
