    question: how to best coat fan and ring?

    after some parts came back from coating I doubt the expertise of the company I gave the parts to.

    how do I work on a proper finish for the fan and the fan ring?
    is it just a decent coating or what is best to be done to get the „motts look“?
    would you coat the „chain housing“?

    The only look that can be reproduced, in my opinion, is the homogenized look, with uniform finish. Im not sure the only original once look can be reproduced. G

    agreed to, but question....how is it done?
    what do I need to tell the guys at the shop, because they do tend to coat it with some sort of silver-plasti-dip.
    I understand the magnesium needs some coating, but...???

    I’ve seen people recommend using Gibbs in other threads on the forum...

    I guess my point is the modeling of color occurs during the die cast process. I look for fan housings, like the one pictured, that aren't all corroded. A good front pulley seal oil leak can preserve one and keep it in good condition. Very light plastic or walnut blast won't destroy color variation and then oil it, Gibbs is the best. The housings are bare Mag, they have no coating.

    The first fan pictured is a 35 yr old new fan, matched with a perfect original housing. This fan and housing is the best I could do. Housing doesn't have as much contrast and is darker. Fan was good and does have light paint/coating with a very light semi clear. Good usable housing are difficult to come by. The more you work with them the worse they get. A guy with a 914-6 at a Parade told me he bought 30 housing to get a good one.

    Process is, blasted, then chromated to neutralize the magnesium. Then coat with wax type lubricant like gibbs or HKS 200. It will quickly oxidize without oil. Any paint type coatings erode on the fan.

    the first picture of the fan looks to be sticking out more than the other pictures in this thread. notice how the other fans are recessed about 1/2 inch or so to the edge of the flair of the housing. The first fan ; the fan blades are right at the edge of the flair. Could this be a fan housing not matched up with the right fan? I know some fan housings have a deeper seat for the fan to seat in. This is because there are bigger and smaller alternators for more or less Amps. Chris
