Thread: Heat affected rear license panel paint

Heat affected rear license panel paint

After a recent engine rebuild (maybe not related) the paint on my rear licence plate panel has begun to blister and it does seem much hotter
    to touch than previous.

Does the muffler have some sort of internal heat shield that might have stopped being effective as I think the muffler is quite old?

Maybe not stock, but I think I put some aluminized type insulation there.

A long time ago …. I had that happen … brand new paint job …. The car was then tuned perfectly and it never happened again …. It was a 1972 mechanical injection car..

I believe the later cars had an aluminized piece that attached to the inner side of the license plate panel. Sorry, don't have any further info.

A very good friend who raced a lot added some very cool louvers to his license panel...

If the ignition is retarded it can run hot.

This is/was a common problem on '73 and earlier cars...especially cars with sport mufflers or cars used on the track. The solution is simple. Take off your bumperettes and rear license panel and the rubber seal across the top. Then take a piece of aluminum (tin works too) the width of the license panel and about 6-8" down. It should be thick enough to be rigid but thin enough to bend. Your local hardware store will have something. Attach it to the area on the chassis approximately where the license panel seal sits. Pop rivets or sheet metal screws both work. Pre-bend it to curve over the top of the muffler and down to about the mid point in the muffler (approximately where the muffler seam is should be enough). It should rest approximately a 1/2" away from the muffler and but not touch the license panel. This will give you a heat shield between the muffler and your rear license panel. When you re-install your license panel it will be hidden and not seen but it will give you the heat protection you need. I've done this on several cars and never had a problem with paint burning or bubbling on the license panel again. I looked but unfortunately don't have a picture. If my description of what you need to make isn't clear enough let me know and I'll see what I can find.
