    Key Indicators of a Low Mileage S?

    Checking out a claimed 20K original mile 2.4S next week. Thought I'd query the registry for tips on what I should be looking for to confirm the mileage claim. Examples might be original protective coatings, original inspection marks, original suspension components, etc....

    Thanks Jon. Should have clarified. Other than service records, what physical characteristics would likely be present in a 20K original mile car? Did Porsche use cosmoline back then? Were any suspension components date coded?

    Yes, there were corrosion inhibitors, date codes, many things- but they're aspects of originality, not necessarily low mileage.

    You should focus more on the car's condition, originality, serial numbers, etc. A 20K mile, 40-year-old car might still have had a major accident, repairs, modifications, been poorly stored or not garaged. Have the car inspected by an expert, or take photos of it and post them here.

    Look for wear on the carpet by the threshold, by the heel pad under the go pedal, the key, scratches and so forth by the ign switch, glass pits, are the seats spongy and deformed. General wear and tear. Its not rocket science. Of course this is assuming all painted and plated surfaces ,carpet and upholstery are original. Should be for 20K claimed

    Thanks for the tips guys. I'm aware of the degree of wear checks. Looking for more obscure and less known items to check for. An example might be date codes on hood shocks. Those can be easily installed though not everyone has a pair of correct date coded hood shocks available, eh? What about inspection marks, paint dabs, etc..?

    It's hard to advise you about things to look for when you haven't indicated what you already know, or your knowledge about such cars.

    Have you confirmed that chassis and engine serial numbers are correct for 2.4 911S model? Are you aware both numbers are coded for year and S-model designation?

    Does seller imply the paint is original? Can you personally examine car for paint overspray, or signs of another color? The paint code is stamped on a small plaque on driver's door hinge pillar. Rubber seals around windows, doors will be hard, cracked, shrunken if original. Underbody areas will be uniformly dirty, dusty if original, even areas of surface rust, likewise chassis fasteners, suspension arms. Rubber suspension bushings will be cracked.

    Are you aware of correct, original aspects for this model? Seats, wheels, trim? Does car have steel front spoiler? Do you know differences between '72 and '73 model 2.4S?

    It would be helpful if you tell us what you already know about the car.

    For 20k mls I would expect the paint to be all original and in good shape, it this the case?
    That would be one of the best signs of the true mileafe of the car. Another point is to verify history of the car, there should be a documented reason to claim such a low mileage in 40 years.
    Protective vax in the wheel arches is a good sign, but my car, that has 75k mls, still has a good part of it.

    one small over looked thing is the wear on the brake pedal pad - but with a car that old and so low miles I think u can tell storage vs miles
