Like it or not, the Porsche group in general is an aging one, especially in the world of 356. There is plenty of enthusiasm, I know I get calls from young guys all the time, it's just that their wallets don't match their passion.

All the Registries need to work really hard at attracting these guys, there has been exhausting discussions on the 356 Registry board about how to do this but one of the main things is to make them feel welcome and the group inclusive.

When people ask me how old is the average Registry member, I show them this pic from about 5 years ago, I'm the one standing, in a sea of grey...

Well said. I wouldn't say I have champagne taste on beer budget but I would agree that I was 5-10 years too young to get in before the rising action. Were I still single there's no doubt I would have a nice hot rod as my daily driver but wife, young kids, mortgage, tithe and 401k have left little room for toys as of late.

I will say that one of the things that has kept me around the registry is the fact that although I don't have an early 911, no one has ever made me feel like I had to have one to participate in the discussion. I love to support my hobby by buying and selling Porsche/VW parts and thankfully I've been able to make some side money while contributing to other peoples collections along the way. That's enough to wet my whistle until I can make the next step.

Whether at the track or in the grass, put the beat down on the youngsters. Everyone admires success.
Some of these younger guys are owned by peer pressure and what's "cool". There's nothing more disturbing than to see an old guy trying to fit in with a younger crew; it's downright embarrassing. I say do your thing and do it exceptionally well whether someone else thinks it's cool or not.

But here's the real problem: American culture has lost its way in honoring elders. Unfortunately there is no longer an intrinsic respect for older, wiser folks who have seen and experienced things that some of these young people could never fathom. Most cultures do this much better than us. The arrogant and selfish mindset that manifests this is breathtaking... but not surprising.

Reflecting on rifts that surface occasionally between the haves and have nots here, such as those intimately involved with restos, repairs, sales, verses.. guys that do not own an early car yet consider the site to be a good hang...

Donations, fees, etc., for expenses are a reality, but if the idea is taken a step further, most institutions of higher learning set up what is known as 'endowments' in order not to spend the funds, but rather grow them over time into healthy amounts. When that happens, there is little resentment toward anyone using the library so to speak. Realizing endowments are not something easily set up, but the concept could be emulated in some fashion. Funds that are invested well - it's difficult to believe how successful the idea has been for them :
