SWB undercoating conundrum, question for the experts

We are getting ready to undercoat my car and are ironing out the last questions we have with regard to how the factory approached this.

It appears that the undercoating was applied to the rear seat area of the car before paint. From studying my car it appears that the undercoating underneath the car and inside the front and rear compartments was applied after the car was painted. Is this correct and does it match with other people's observation?

On the 356's the undercoating was applied before paint leading to factory overspray which got blacked out in the most visible area's but not everywhere. It seems that the order was reversed for the 900 series cars.

    Many thanks for your input,

    JK

I'm not sure if I'm on the right track with this but I can tell you that there was no paint under the factory undercoating.
We were able to remove the factory undercoat from my car but still preserve the original steel makers mark and dates on the floorpan.(RHD '65 build)

    Hi Joris,

Here is a picture of the undercoating being applied in 1967. Hope this helps.

Exactly! But also thats why these rusted like crazy and that there should definately be proper epoxy primer below undercoating when restoring these.

Thanks Brad, that solves it. My assumption already felt uncomfortable glad to know it was wrong. The masking tape applied is very interesting to note.

Hard to see in the picture but it appears as tough faux hinges are attached to the car to prevent undercoating build up in those areas. This would be consistent with observations on the lack of undercoating under the hinges on my car.

Ok, some more interesting tid-bits, first check the video at minute 7:20 onwards https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4AXW4l55T8 Also check the below picture. Surprisd by the massive amount of exterior color coverage underneath the car. Do not know if this is a SWB car or not. Others may be able to tellName: P1010041.jpg

Not faux as hinges were on the car when all the panels were fitted. Must have been covers to prevent overspray
