    FS @BaT: '73 'S' Targa . . .

    KKKKKKKKKKKKKKK ------- 3rd time trying . . .

    VIN = 9113310632
    Eng# = 6331487
    Trans# = 337336
    Prod# = ?

'. . . This 1973 Porsche 911S Targa is finished in Silver Metallic over a black leatherette interior and shows an indicated 81k miles. Sold new by a dealership in Lincoln Nebraska, it was built during the final year of longhood F-series 911 production and comes equipped with a set of optional sport seats, and dealer-installed air conditioning. Power comes from a fuel injected 2.4-liter flat six paired to a 5-speed manual transaxle, both of which are numbers-matching and have been rebuilt within the past six years. This 911S is being offered by an independent Porsche shop in Arizona on the seller’s behalf, and offered with documentation, a Porsche CoA, and a clear Nebraska title

A repaint in the factory Silver Metallic was performed in 1994. Photos of the process, showing the exterior trim removed and the exterior primed have been provided int he gallery below. Deco-trim and wheel well moldings were reinstalled during reassembly, as the car was originally equipped. The targa top has also been recovered in recent years. A few imperfections have accumulated in the trim and paint since the work was completed.

The 6″x15″ Fuchs wheel were reconditioned and come wrapped in Michelin tires. Braking is from 4-wheel vented discs with aluminum ‘S’ calipers up front, and the system is plumbed with braided stainless hoses.

The interior is described as a mix of original and replacement items, including the factory-installed sport seats and Blaupunkt stereo. Air conditioning was reportedly added by the dealership using factory components when the car was new, and the system was serviced in the last year. Approximately 81k miles are shown on the 5-digit odometer.

In S trim, the mechanically fuel-injected 2.4-liter flat six was factory rated at 190 horsepower at 6,500 rpm. This example was reportedly rebuilt approximately 2,500 miles ago in 2014 by a Nebraska-based specialist, with machine work handled by Walt Watson of Competition Engineering. A replacement 1973-specific, RS/S style trombone oil cooler has been added in the passenger side front fender. The 5-speed 915 transaxle was reportedly overhauled two years prior.

Engine #6331487 is shown above and matched by the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity below. A photo of the matching transaxle stamping #337336 is provided in the gallery.

The maintenance book shows dealer stampings up to 1976, and records dating from 1984 have been retained in a service file. Documentation reportedly shows the ownership history listed below:

    * Purchased new by Mr. Reid of Hamburg, Iowa and put into service 8/73 with 95 miles shown.
    * The second owner was Mr. Stanley Mills from Lincoln, Nebraska
    * The third owner was Mr. Woods of Lincoln, Nebraska. Sale date 7/84 with 46,479 miles shown.
    * Sold to Mr. Virgil Stewart of Lincoln, Nebraska in 5/86 with approximately 50,400 indicated miles.
    * Sold to Mr. Krantz of Omaha, Nebraska in 1/88 with 51,605 indicated miles.
    * Purchased by Mr. Hutchinson of Lincoln, Nebraska in 8/90 with approximately 56k indicated miles. Service records show that he added 12k miles during his ownership.
    * The current owner purchased 1/95 from Mr. Hutchinson with 68k indicated miles

Now being 56 yrs old and I can look back it all started from hearing the stories of when my father was a Studebaker Dealer and him driving an early 50's Super Hawk or Golden Hawk with a supercharger or turbo on it, to the older brother driving Muscle Cars in the 60's then having them myself, racing motor bikes of 2, 3, and 4 wheels, drag racing, and even being involved in the local stock car scene, from there graduating into sports cars of the English type, MGB's, Midget's, and TR6's (still to poor for the Jag). So the love affair with speed has always been there, the lack of reliability with the British Motor Cars just got to be to much of a hassle, tax brackets improved (if you want to see it that way) and I became friends with a number of local guys here that were enjoying the Porsche Brand. The brand has always had a mystigue about it, and as Magnus stated everyone knows the 911 no matter what # they put on it it is still the 911!!! And having been in the Heartland (Nebraska) all my life there just was not many of them around so when you saw one you took note of it and in my case it was that thought 1 day I will have one of those weird sounding, oil dripping, good looking, machines that drive all the girls crazy! So I bought it and it is still driving the girl who has put up with me for 32 years CRAZY on several fronts (if you know what I mean).

The guy doing the work has been taking pics and so once we get her back and on the road I will get some shots posted!
Maybe even give the GoPro a shot!
I have the COA and will get that up also!
Thanks go to guys like Tom Butler and Carrera6 on here for getting me some parts that were missing, Terry of Terry Worick Restorations, and Gerry of GK limited for all the fine work they have done for us over the years!

    New to the Registry . . .

Just wanted to say Hello and give some back ground as well as some observations.

We have a 73S Targa VIN and Chasis # 9113310632, Engine # 6331487 I do not have the trans # at this time but will get it here in the next couple of weeks as the motor is coming out.

The Story/History of the car is some what long and I have spoken with 5 of the 6 previous owners (we are #7) and have owned the car since 96. The only owner I have not spoken to was the original owner who is now passed.
The car was purchased in Omaha Ne. by a farmer from Hamburg Ia. his wife did not want the car as it was a manual trans and she wanted a Vet. with a auto trans. The original plan (as told to me by the 2nd owner) was to give the car to their son when he came back from a Foreign Exhange Student program in Europe and he would take the car to college in California at Stanford U. Well as luck would have it Dad was caught speeding on I29 in excess of well over 100 MPH to which he lost his license and the wife said the car has to go back to the dealer and wait for the son to come back and pick it up after only 1,500 miles. The son makes it back and claims it is a used car and he does not want it, he wants a Blue 74 with a snack tray and graphics so that is what he gets.
The 2nd owner (from Lincoln Ne) who knows the car is at the Dealer and has seen it gets a call from them telling him that now the car is available when only weeks before it was not so he makes the trip up the road and buys the car. He was a Mechanic and wanted to Autocross the car (which he did), he is still into the Pcars and races down at Topeka Ks. He had a shop and was getting a lot of grief from his customers about how he must charge to much to be able to afford a Porsche and finally gave into another 73S Targa owner in town and sold it to him, this individuals family was well to do and owned numerous businesses and property all over the country, he came back from a trip, went back to the 2nd buyer and said I need to sell some things do you want to buy the Silver car back. The 2nd owner was raising a family and said he just could not justify it but he had a guy that would take it. Thus the 4th owner purchased the car and used it as a daily driver ( my wife worked with this owner) after a couple of years he sold the car to a business associate in Omaha (5th owner) and after only several months of ownership the car was stolen. It was found after only 2 days in Omaha with the radio missing, no dents, no dings and not all torn up. Well he had a bad taste in mouth for it and sold the car to the 6th owner who lived in Lincoln and was a friend of mine. He drove the car for a # of years before I purchased the car from him.
While the car has lived in the Midwest thru out it has been driven in the snow only 1 time and that was a freak storm that blew in, the 2nd owner called the 6th after seeing it parked at the Court House (his wife was a lawyer) and told him to get the car home before they put salt down which was done.
Upon our purchasing the car knowing that it needed a re-paint due to some one covering it right after bringing it home which caused it to orange peel I drove it some then took it apart myself in my garage. All the glass (man are those back windows tough), bumpers, chrome, door handles, decals, wipers, valances, hoods, etc. at that point I loaded it and took it for a bead blast back to bare metal. At that point we found 1 8"x8" repair on the left front fender right where the 3rd owner told me it had been backed into. The paint was completed including both sides of the hood and trunk lids, door jambs, all window areas (as seals and glass were out) so HOPEFULLY I did what you all would recomend. All new seals from Stoddards were ordered and installed in all lenses, lights, door handles, windows, targa bar, etc.
We then enjoyed the car for several years but priorities changed with kids activities, driving a nice new A6, and along with knowing the car needed valve guides and a few other things done. So once the son reached 16 I pulled the car in the spare garage space, pulled the key, and covered it. That was 8 years ago and the car has been started spairingly during the time it sat.
Now to present time we sold our house by accident and had no place for the car to rest. Thus with all the family gone and it is just the wife and I we decided to do the right thing and have the motor re-freshed.

Any way that is most of the story of our S Targa, I have sent in for a COA and will post it when I get it.
74,000 miles, original sport seats, original carpet, Mono wheel, Fuchs, AC, has Webers but we also have the MFI which is going to be put back on as well, no rust on any pans, battery boxes, or any place on the car, and of course a cracked dash.

I will post some photos when I can but it will be a while before I can get that done.

Comments or tips are VERY WELCOME!

I got the call late the day before that she fired right up so upon completing the work I knew I had to get done I took the 30 mile trip to the shop. As I pulled up I could see her sitting on her wheels with her butt out of the door, the hood up and I could see she was running! Oh what a nice sound to hit me as I opened the door to the truck, Terry standing there grinning and saying she is a little rich but sounds good. Now since owning the car I had never heard it run with the MFI (I had it in a box) so that was a 1st, and with the revs set about 2500 for the break in the sound coming from the bay and exhaust was so freaking sweet!
Should be back on the road with in a couple weeks and I certainly cannot wait!
Just had to share the moment and a few more thoughts!

That 9 years ago when we parked the car there were several reasons why #1 was called a 15 year old male son who had just taken Mom's A6 Quattro out and was trying to power brake it around the neighbor hood at midnight, #2 was we knew she needed at least valve guides and probably a lot more, so the keys came out the cover went on and we walked away.
Fast forward to the present and the kids are grown and gone, sold the big house, no place to keep her, knew the car was special and that it deserved to be back on the road so we sent her off to get ready for the prom.
I had pretty much lost the passion and considered selling but after watching this board, being around the shops that worked on her, and HEARING that certain sound that only comes from these cars I can hardly wait to feel her under me.
So soon another rust free, number matching, early LWB NEBRASKA S will be back where she belongs on a nice road trip thru the Sand Hills, I might even take her up to see Kathleen in Burwell!

    73S Targa . . .

Nothing personal Rick but one of the line items in BaT's contract is that the car cannot be advertised elsewhere. That's why the other threads were deleted.

    This one's great. Thanks.

    Hm --- well . . .

. . . this is not your advertisement, Frankster

This is my notification --- a personal posting by me concerning some historical backround on a car . . . one that has been on this site for years, now coming-up at an auction to which I am not a party to + have zero interest in . . .

    Really Short Version . . . = it's not my car

    . . . and my comments are otherwise better known as free-speech . . .

    . . . if not free advertising

And I would also point out that I (+ Others) 've posted numerous such notices of BaT auctions --- which has no-doubt increased both attention paid to --- as well as Sellers on . . . their web-site . . .

. . . without so much as a bat fart from their general direction

(And all this from the same set of Closet Cases that let you bestow upon yourself that oh-so play-ground friendly handle?)

    Gimme a break

    What's next? --- no discussion of anything that's posted on their site? . . . by anyone? . . . anywhere? . . . anytime?

    Well --- fook 'em!

Sounds like someone spiked your coffee with K2 Rick?

“For Sale” threads on this car should have been the only ones deleted.

    Damn you Frank!

I've got enough distractions without BaT.
Randy (the owner/Originator of BaT)is a friend of mine but I have been able to keep my focus away from his site until your last go around. Now I'm hooked. How 'bout the R Code 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 427 4-Speed? or, better yet, the "PTS Sepia Brown 08 Turbo? https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...e-911-turbo-5/. Good thing I'm now retired and can waste most of my day away looking at stuff that I should have bought many years ago.

    Ciao

I hit it off right away with the those-who-take-themselves-too-seriously crowd in the Turdbo auction.

    Good stuff.

Great looking Targa Frank, I am biased of course. GLWS
I did notice that the front pan drains were replaced with belly pan plugs. Deal breaker of course
It's amazing how many 73S Targas, (at least in the final months of production), came out with the exact same spec. Silver, sport seats, fog lights, radio install kit, dealer installed A/C. Must have been the same guy placing the orders.
