Area inside trunk with little paint for 1971

Does anyone know why there is always a square spot, circled in photo, where there is less paint?
Do you think there was a little card, or piece of paper, or a build sheet in this area when painted?
I see it often on unrestored cars from around 1971.
My car had it too, but I had to sand out the area, and primer it.

Good question. Here's an original paint 73E with it also. I've always wondered that also.

When you say from 1971 do you mean 1971 model year cars or 1971 production dates? My 1971 has an 11/70 date and I do not see the mark. I’m pretty sure my trunk paint is original.

My 11/70 car does not have it either.

The cars I have seen it in are non karmann.
I couldn’t tell you the years, It just always stood out, in the non-blacked-out-painted-hood-area-cars.
In general when you paint something, you want it smooth and blemish free. Yet here is this dark grey square.
And I was perplexed to see how consistent it was.

Here is the same area from my 71 911T. Discount the hole as it was probably put there by me back in the 70s. Notice that the dark areas are hand painted by somebody in the factory (A SWAG on my part). It does have some darker paint in the area but appears to be an addition not an omission. Mine is a Karman built car and being Sepia Brown, is genetically superior to all of its siblings, which may explain the difference.

    Regards

    Jim
