FS: Early 911 aluminum wood steering wheel

For sale is a very nice original VDO early 911 aluminum steering wheel. If you have the right car and are considering purchasing one, perhaps you have already educated yourself. If not, there is a good thread in the forum about these wheels. Buying an aluminum wheel requires significantly more discretion than the later steel version. That is because the spokes are anodized aluminum. You must find one that has not been bent and ideally one that has not had the spokes painted over. If they have been painted you would not be able to identify any stress fractures and you cannot recreate the original finish.
The wheel for sale is very straight and very original. It has the original black anodizing on the spokes. The wood is very good. I am not able to be certain whether it has had another coat of finish added. If so, it was minimal. It looks like a wheel with the original finish but almost too good to believe it hasn’t had a light coat of protective finish on the wood. Hopefully, the photos will show enough - but I will be happy to email or send additional ones. $3750
Price is plus shipping and fees.

Great looking wheel. GLWS (and a free bump).

If I didn't already have one on my shelf, I'd love to have it ;-).

Thank you Oscillon. I have had 3 of these over my lifetime and this one is the nicest. It was stored on the shelf for the past 25 years and may have been longer. It is the most original one I have seen.

[QUOTE=tcsracing1;994983]is there a date for the wheel?

All of the aluminum steering wheels were made in 1964-65. There is no date stamp on them.
The early prototype 911s actually used the 356 Bakelite wheel but production 911s had the wood wheel as standard. They were aluminum with lighter wood and the spline showing and the spokes were black anodized. Sometime in late 65 Porsche replaced the aluminum with steel, generally the wood was darker, and the spokes were black plastic covered steel. This wheel continued through the 68 model year. Wood wheels were always optional on 912s.

i have a wood wheel that came from a 1967S.
thought to be original. Exception condition.
It looks different then this wheel as my wheel appears solid wood whereas this wheel looks to have been sandwiched on the wheel frame?

I might be restoring a 66' sunroof coupe and would like to make sure i have the "correct" wheel.

I think that’s the difference between aluminum and steel?

Your wheel in the photo appears to be a steel wheel which would be correct for a 67S. I sent you a PM for other questions.
