I think they still offer Porsches in Böblingen - the Porsche Zentrum Böblingen is part of the Hahn Gruppe.

I just got news from the previous owner.
The engine swap didn't take place in the US - it happened in Zurich around 85 or 86 in a Porsche garage but not a Porsche dealership. Name is unknown...
That leads to the very likely conclusion that the engine is still in good old Europe.
    Eventually.
Does this help - I doubt it but maybe anyone around here has an idea how to move on.

Can one get a kardex for a '73 through the usual non-Porsche sources?

    Yea, my fault.
I bought it as signal orange but later learned it is actually signal yellow.

is there any chance that it was registered in Switzerland before the engine swap and there may be a registration record there showing its engine number. Maybe a Swiss member can comment on that. Given it was not imported there new I suspect the normal very informative AMAG records there wont apply
