    Optima Battery Finally Died

Well my Optima 800 installed in my 70 911T finally gave up the ghost....Installed in November 1997, that's right! Just lost its cranking power. Of course i used a battery maintainer, but the car lives in Texas and the hot summers usually toast a battery in three years.

A few months back A friend brought over his 2003 996. He said his battery just all of a sudden died and I figured there's no way it could be the original battery. In fact it was the original battery to the car. Being the owner of a long hood, I've learned to not throw anything Porsche related away. Maybe in 40 years when I kick the bucket, it'll be worth $10k. What a sad state I'm in.

Bob, those old ones were much better. I had one of about the same vintage that I finally had to get rid of about 4-5 years ago. I never put it on a maintainer but it would be disconnected often while something was being done on the car. ...and it was a Houston, TX car.

Presently have four Sears batteries in service, two Plus Start, two Die Hard. Times since installation are 18y 2m, 17y 3m, 19y 9m and 15y 11m. No trickle chargers or battery tenders ever. Battery disconnect switch used whenever vehicle is to remain idle for more than a day or so.

I'm about to put 2 batteries in a 69E targa that's being restored. Any suggestions what I should buy,

Buy yourself two AGM batteries designed for the Mazda Miata...they’re not too expensive and they fit nicely. There are several threads on this subject here.

Following an idea posted by Ed Mayo in another thread, I painted my Miata AGM batteries semi-gloss black and applied a Varta decal for that vintage look:

Today I finished my dual-battery install. It’s not concours but it’ll definitely pass muster at the next Cars & Coffee:
