Here is the grill that covers the rear tunnel access, it has the same expanded style aluminum as the fresh air intake behind it.
Does any grille clothe go behind this?

Does the car have a gas heater? Correct me if I'm wrong but if no gas heater there should be a heavy piece of tar paper to close off the grill, to reduce noise and ????
have seen the tar paper on several lwb cars...i once even saw a black fabric between the mesh and louvers(like it is on swb dash speaker perforation)
...my 65 and 67 non gas heater cars had the non louver covers but not sure if those where ever replaced...the 65 did not even have the flange for the main unit inside the smugglers box nor the right front wheel house louvers (air suply for the heater) so why should there be a louvered lid?
a friend of mine has a NOS(swb) gas heater kit and it includes the louvered lid...assuming swb non gas heater came with the closed lid---could be all wrong
i do have a NOS (lwb) gas heater kit and it does not include any lid

The expanded metal mesh is aluminum and attached to the cover with epoxy. This comes from my cloudy memory, though. JK in Amsterdam will know for sure. He has the best original one I have ever seen on this late 65 911 (66YM).
and his car is equipped with a gas heater

My 67 912 has a solid metal cover with a tar paper underneath & no gas heater..... I agree with # 3 above...cliff

My ‘68 right hand drive (no heater) has louvered lid and black tar paper.
On my early car it is as described- a black wrinkle paint and black aluminum grill held in place with epoxy, no blocking. I was told this is the air intake for the gas heater and not to let it blocked. Not sure on that.
On the later car it does have a complete blocking pad, almost like a sound deadener, with no ventilation cut outs. It is thicker than tar paper.
