I think the cover on the old cars is gloss black, not wrinkle finish, Here's the best period photo I have, from an early-65 Porsche of America brochure:

    Name: Type_911-2000_3.jpg

The hardcopy parts catalog shows two parts numbers:

901.504.077.30 Deckel für Tunnel hinten | Cover for rear tunnel | type 911 from chassis No. on ... 505101 (beginning of 1967)

901.504.075.31 Deckel für Tunnel hinten | Cover for rear tunnel | For type 911 up to chassis No. 305100 serial. For heating Webasto or blower optional.

Yes, I know there's an overlap in chassis numbers. PET is worse, it shows 901.504.731.30 up to 305100, then 901.504.731.30 after 305101, and finally 901.504.731.30 in 1969.

If it helps any, here's a diagram of the "new" heating system from an October 1964 brochure:

I don't recall ever seeing a "gloss black" cover. They were either wrinkle finish(the ones for the gas heater) or semi gloss for the ones for cars without a gas heater. Maybe somne of the original owners of early cars can chime in on this.

    Regards

    Jim

I've got a limited sample size. My car, 301382, was pretty unmolested when I got it 21 years ago and didn't have a wrinkle finish then. I'd say it was at least semi gloss.

I agree with Jim A. for the '65 cars. Mine is gloss too,

My 67S, 305XXXS, looks like the one Eric posted. My Italian 73S came with the gas heater switch and wiring and the wrinkle finish plate with open louvers. But no heater. Never had one just the preparation for one. The switch is mounted to the right of the steering column as pictured in the Italian manual.

1969 Karmann Coupe, no heater. Grille has been removed several times during life of car to adjust shift linkage, replace bushings. etc., with original fasteners always being reinstalled including the brown fiber washers. Grille is semi-gloss black with a "tarred cardboard" backing as supplied on vehicles without heaters.

Would anybody have some good pictures of the original style washers/cups? Tia JK
