1968 rear Caliper ID. Help appreciated

Hi all. I am in the process of going through the brakes on a 1968 911 that has been sitting for almost 25 years. I took the rear calipers off, and ordered a rebuilt set through PMB. The rears I got are not matching the ones I took off and I am trying to figure out why. Here are pics of the tears I took off, then I’ll post the tears I have to put on. Thanks. it looks like the caliper you removed is for vented rotors, and the one you received from rebuilder is for non-vented rotor.

Yes, I have just compared the rotor I took off to the new rotor I put on, and the old rotor is vented. What came stock on a US spec 911 for 1968? VIN 11830XX

You may want to contact PMB. I have just sent my 68 calipers and Eric at PMB has been very helpful. He also has a lot of info on the 67-68 rears on PMB website.

If those are off a 67S or a 68L or S fitted for vented rotors I think they have 38mm pistons upgraded from the non L or S 35mm pistons. If so those are hard to come buy and valuable. The S vented rotors are expensive. I have 944 rotors milled down 2 mm on my car.

Yes, exactly. Eric @ PMB was helpful with identification. One telltale according to him is the existence of 11mm nuts on the insides of the caliper. Also, he asked that I remove the boot, and send a picture of the piston as well, so that he could confirm the larger 38mm.

NOBODY had rebuilt readily available, so I sent mine off to Utah, and am excited to see the new jewelry for my car.

Man, it’s so great to have such a knowledgeable community to draw info from. Thanks.

Yes, these look like the Wide L calipers, except they don’t have crossover tubes. The nut size is indeed 11mm. Any ideas what/why that might be?

The 'S', 'L' and sporto cars came with the vented rotors.

The calipers are not 68 calipers but 69 calipers. Your car appears to be a 69 year model car not a 68. Big difference in the brakes and calipers from a "68" will not fit on a "69". Yes, you got "non vented" rotor calipers which were common on 911Ts and 912s.

PS: 68 Calipers are very different than yours.
