Well, I'm retired, so I can play with my car a lot more often than many can. And you are doing yours to a higher standard than I am, Ravi. Takes longer to do it your way.

Good to know, Clyde. Will PM you if something comes up.

Still on track to deliver the car to the paint shop in 4 weeks or so. I've started removing some of the exterior trim, and disassembly will get a lot more serious next week, after a last trip in faded pink to our local PCA's coffee meeting this coming Saturday.

First bunch of the required parts has been picked up. That includes some bigger parts (both size and cost) - such as the new dash pad, windshield and rear window trim, a bunch of seals and rubber, and even a new-to-me rear window. (The rear window in the car now is not original, being clear glass, the car was built with tinted all around.)

    Not much to see yet...

    Arne,

You’re making quick work of this! Thanks for ‘documenting’ along the way. It’s going to be awesome when done!

I'm motivated to get it done. It's the only one I have, and I can't drive it when it's torn apart. Mere possession is not enough for me, I must be able to drive it, and also feel good about its condition and appearance.

The last 2 refresh projects I had ('73 914 2.0 and a '64 FJ40 soft top) both took 10-11 months. This one won't be complete that quick, I need to drag it out some due to cash flow concerns.

Disassembly continues. Probably 2 more days to finish pulling the interior and the rest of the glass. Then I'll deliver it to the paint shop.

Trim and other part removal for paint is complete. I'm planning to trailer it to the painter early next week. A few thoughts on what I've found:

    • The car is—as I had believed—generally solid and sound. Pans and such are all great.

    • It has taken a hit on the LR at some time in the distant past. The contours of the bumper and the quarter panel are all goofy. I've acquired a Dansk repro bumper for that side, and I suspect it would fit pretty well if the fender contours were not a total figment of someone's imagination. Going to be some work needed back there.

    • Once the tattered remains of the headliner were removed, I figured out why I couldn't get the interior lights to work. Wires nibbled by some damned rodent(s). All re-wired and working now.

    • Production number under the dash pad matches the stamped number under the kneepad. But they scrawled it right over a piece of tape!

The car has already lost some of the lousy red paint today and is on its way to bare metal.

Probably should note here that while I mentioned in a previous post that I discussed this job with Scott Longballa, I've decided to have a local shop do the work since I did the disassembly and will be doing the reassembly myself. And Scott is pretty busy with several projects going now as well.

No new pictures today, but soon...

I'm sure it's going to look incredible Arne, but after following your journey I'm also a little sad to see the battered, ratty look go.
then again, easy to say if you're not the owner/driver.
thanks for sharing your story & progress!
