The "cold or wet" limitation for the Avons eliminates close to half the year for me, not a good thing. Wet grip is a common complaint with XWXs, and P6000s aren't good when cold.

I don't care for the P6000s anyway, too modern looking.

If I end up driving the new-to-me '72 T as much as I did my '84 Carrera (and no reason to think I won't), 5000 miles is about every year and a half. Not all that wonderful.

I suspect I'm going to end up with CN36s...

I've been curious for a while now about the—gasp!—BFG Radial T/A (with the black letters turned out, obviously) in 205/60R15. I know, I know...but I believe the compound/rubber may have been updated while keeping the design/sidewall/tread pattern. They used to be dirt cheap but are now merely reasonable. I've seen them used on one very nice early 911 and one 914, and have always wondered how they might perform. Hard to believe they're not ahead of tires of the period, even if they are behind today's best. Maybe a nicer "working window," too. Anyone have experience with them?

    For reference, here's Pete's 914 wearing the 185/70/15 Avon's on deep 6's.
....hope you don't mind me posting the photo Pete ☺️

    Hi

Just to put my tuppence worth in.

i think the CR6ZZ are brilliant. https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/vin...von-cr6zz.html although they are a bit of a racing tyre and don't look period (because the aren't) they do have a great carcass for carts of this period.

Pirelli https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/pir...rato-cn36.html It is worth pointing out that this is a road tyre with Pirellis modern compounds and quality control built on the best carcass. It is also worth pointing out that this is the tyre that Porsche recommend. They are a lot lighter, so dramatically improving the unstrung rotating mass.

    No worries!

The CR6ZZ looks great on vintage Porsches, in my opinion. While certainly not *correct*, like an OE tire design, they do look period to these eyes against all of the modern tires. It should be noted that the CR6ZZ comes in different commands and I selected the hardest compound. In hindsight, they're wearing like iron given the car's limited use, and I might have tried something softer.

As a "bit" of a hot-rodder, the true OE tires don't interest me much—and I feel the sweet spot for performance, plain sidewalls, sidewall bulge, and fender fill on narrow 911s and 914s was the A-008 (whether P, R, RS, RS-TU) from Yokohama in 195/65R15 or 205/60R15 sizing. Not great in the wet, but the soft compound versions (R and up the scale) were beautifully progressive at the limit in the dry—a huge confidence builder. The A-008's sidewall was beautifully simple, too. Looked "right" on anything. Alas....

Pete- I wholeheartedly agree with you on the A-008, a perfect tire for “our” cars in many respects. Please offer Yoko a nice article about the history of this tire in 000 and ask in return if they will start production in the sizes you stated. We need a few more choices for 15 x 6&7’s! Nick

Speaking of Yokohama, has anyone tried the A048 R compound? They come in a 205/60r15.

The A 008 will give you more grip. but they won't handle as well as the CN36 or the CR6ZZ

Yeah ,,, I run them , but not for long,, stick like shxt to anything.

Expense,, no. not for what you get.

2nd set this summer but the roads have been overly hot this summer as well as some recreational tracking (200 km)

They are a tad 'rowdy' on certain surfaces. The tyre appears to me to be responsive and communicates well and has a predictive sidewall dynamic that suits the set up I have at present.

Oh,, and they DO pump the water as if driven as a 'road' tyre. Really Really well.

I have XWX as well but although they are a good period tyre they re definitely not a GREAT tyre ,, performance wise that is.. Happy New Year to all,, and ""stay on the 'black stuff' ""

Dougal, in what aspects will the yoko not handle as well as the Avon and Pirelli. From my understanding the Yoko will not be as progressive at the limit given the square shoulder profile, but what are the other negative handling characteristics?
