    Sorting rust in petrol tank

I have a 1967 original petrol tank that I would like to keep on the car.
My restorer is very reluctant to put it back on the car.
Has anyone resolved the issue of rust ?
Do more recent tanks have any kind of protective layer ?
The rust does not look terrible.
    Thanks
    David

Do what you can to save the original tank. Most city’s have a place that can clean the tank for you.

    Check out Caswell.
They have a system/sealant that will work.

It sound crazy, but white vinegar works really well to get the rust out. When you buy it by the gallon it is around $3/per here in California.

The only trouble is you may have some pinhole leaks once you remove all the rust. I had this problem and had to use RED-KOTE sealer in the tank. I am pleased with the RED-KOTE so far.

    Best regards,

Have used the regular Blue liquid toilet bowl cleaner on a fuel tanks from motorcycles, acidic stuff removes rust quite well, must be neutralized with fresh water well, then treat with light oil to prevent flash bloom rust.
Current fleet, mostly rubbish automobiles and other assorted junk.

I'll offer different advice...you made mention of a 'restorer', so I suspect the car is not entirely still original so I'd recommend a new tank. Personally, I would never considering doing anything other than that...the risk of it not being done perfectly and a follow on concern of the internal coating finding it's way into the fuel system is a deal breaker for me. I personally replace everything in the fuel system - front to back.

My body shop discarded the original tank without asking me. I was rather displeased, as I would have restored it myself, which has become fairly standard practice. A '67 would justify the effort.
