Erratic 2.0S by 3°C and heavy rain

    Greetings,

I did participate to a winter rallye yesterday from 5:00 pm til 11:00 pm, meaning 1°C to 3°C, a bit of snow and heavy rain. My 2.0S (stock but HC Wossner pistons, heavy duty oil pump, BPE7S spark plugs and electronic distributor) was running bizarre, after few miles - starting to run erratic between 3000rpm and 5000rpm with gentle throttle, but if putting pedal to the metal going pretty well - then lost idle like if it wad never there and had many backfire like in the exhaust (like running poor mixture) - had a mandatory stop at a checkpoint for 10' - start the engine and got idle back but as soon as I drove for a few mile same : no idle and erratic again. Oil temp was very low (below 1st mark - 170F) and for the last 30' engine was like having a lag at throttle and sounded like it was badly tuned up . No weird noise at all (metallic, or klong :-)

Have not yet tried to start again today.

Is it caused by the cold and heavy humidity only? Which I suspect as cold air is more dense than hot air, meaning running poor + not having the engine getting in normal running temp and staying very cold.

Fix could be to install an engine grill protection ? and I guess tuning the IDS up for cold weather.

    Cheers
    X

    Carb icing?

Here's the answer Porsche used for the 356 with "German" or "North Country" heating systems. Flip the valve open for winter and closed for summer.

    Thanks a lot.
It is disappointing that a long text to write (for a non native english) to have such a short answer.

So to avoid that, an engine grill cover should make it.

The original metal air cleaner would have had a tube from the hot air channel to the snorkle which probably would have stopped the icing by introducing warm intake air.

I have been running my MFI 2.7 RS car more this winter due to lack of snow and have the grille almost completely covered when temps are below 0 degree centigrade. 180F oil temps easily achieved with good heater output... I don't have the snorkel but would be interested to try it.
