    Lightmetal wheel

    I just picked up a 904 wheel, 6Kx15. This wheel has aluminum rim AND center, riveted together. Anyone ever heard of such a wheel? In my 4 decades of Porsche parts, I`ve never seen a wheel like this.....anyone? Stampings in the center are: "KPZ"......"5/65"......"3.7"......"6Kx15"......."LM"........6990 16. I`m thinkin the "LM" means lightmetal, as that is what the factory calls these "alloy/steel" wheels. I`ve had many alloy/steel wheels over the years, but none like this one, all aluminum. I checked again with the magnet, the center is definately aluminum.

    Never heard of alu centers --- on any Porsche 'GT' wheel . . .

    . . . and there 'd be no reason to rivet them to an alu rim

    I'd quickly call the brake shop and tell them not to blast the wheel.
    You can only do worse by not having it treated by a specialist.

    I agree with Uli.
    I have these same wheels on my Speedster and was told they belong to a 550 Spyder. The outer portions are aluminum and blasting cannot be good for them!

    Lightmetal wheel

    This wheel has not been modified or messed with at all. I checked with a magnet again.....center and hoop are aluminum. I`ve never seen that KPZ part number before.

    Sorry......that wheel is much later than my Speedster/550 wheels. But, I still wouldn't blast them.

    I am no expert on these at all. But Given the date stamp is may 1965 is there any chance that these were built especially for le mans and that is what the LM is for?

    I`ve been told that the factory used this type of wheel on their cars only, not a customer item for sale. They destroyed them after races to keep them off the street for obvious safety reasons. Makes sense to me. Any others out there? I learned about 4 decades ago, never say never when it comes to old Porsche parts......and once again, that came true! You early 911 guys......did racers ever use alloy/steel wheels on early 911 race cars?......906 wheels?....7Kx15 would make sense on an old 911. I retrieved the wheel from the brake shop and am currently strippin it the old fashioned way. Like the madam said when she was opening her new brothel....." gonna have to run it by hand til I can hire some new help"

    LM could be for Leichtmetall ;-)

    I stripped the wheel and it`s all nice shiny aluminum.......what a piece! It`s going to be interesting to get the story on this type of wheel, such an oddball!
