    Looks like a rain shroud but different from the 912 item... black anodized grill of more recent vintage?

    It's a German market only rain shield that was part of the 911 rear wiper system. The shield was attached to the inside of the deck lid, not the grill.
    The shield in your photos is in the wrong position. It needs to be turned around, and fitted to to upper side of the deck lid. Good pic of one on the Pelicans.

    thanks guys! it did come to me many years ago with the motor. is there anything unique about the motor assembly. I'll dig that out & post pix if it will help. thanks again

    The information I can find is that cover was only used on German market cars from ‘77 -‘80
