    Numbers anomaly

    Hi

I followed a thread on the sale of a '66 normal:

    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...66-Porsche-911

and noted that the CoA provided shows the VIN 304540 with a 'production completion' date of 21 June 1966.

My car, VIN 304598, 58 cars after this one has a CoA production completion date of 26 May 1966 - 4 weeks earlier than 304540. (My Kardex states completion date is the same, 26 May 1966).

    304540 engine number = 908117
304598 engine is c.200 before that...

    304540 transmission number = 232013
    304598 transmission is c. 1,600 before that...

    304540 webasto number = 005 148
304598 webasto number is c. 600 before that...

    Seems a little strange...

Any historians or numbers guys (DaveP) got ny ideas or is this scale of anomaly unremarkable?

    Cheers

    Stephen,
We all are aware that CoA's are reknown for inaccuracies but I must say that it is an interesting discovery that you have unearthed.
May be a simple typo as I doubt they were not waiting for the noted spare parts bag to arrive for the 304540 car.

I thought maybe DaveP could check the Kardex for 304540 to see if the COA matches... mine does... and the factory confirmed the details too...

It has been my understanding that if a car failed any of the QA checks or the road test for any reason, it went back for remediation which could take days or, perhaps, weeks. In that case, completion date could be way out of sequence.

Could it be due to the colour?

304540 COA just states 'Brown' - no colour code, whilst yours, Steve is a factory Slate Grey, code 6601.

Perchance 304540 was taken off the production line and put into hibernation to await a slot for being sprayed a 'colour to sample'. It would be interesting to see the actual colour of 304540

    Just my 2 pence.

When did the number plate move to the slam panel? I thought that was 67? Maybe late 66?

First, the completion dates on the COA are FALSE; at best it is the invoice date from the factory, and at worst it is the delivery date to the customer. Both are taken from the Kardex. The Kardex may have both dates, one of the two or neither. In general the earliest Kardex date can be weeks after completion date. Numbered bodies were delivered by Reutter to the factory, and not always in serial sequence. The completion of the cars was not in serial sequence. The engines, transmissions and Webasto heaters were pulled at random from a large stock, and usually in first-in last-out sequence.

I believe the VIN tag moved to the slam panel between 303111 and 303145 around Dec 1 1965 going by Kardex dates.

Yes strange things happen - as per Kardex engine in my car is six months earlier than one would expect.

"....Could it be due to the colour?...304540 COA just states 'Brown' - no colour code...."

    this is interesting, .....
what does the tag has stamped on it and the Kardex would really help.
