Thread: ‘73 air conditioner question

    I have to agree. The fender unit looks a bit home made. The car was delivered to Puerto Rico so I would think they needed every condenser they could put on the car but things happen over time. I’m in southeast Missouri, so pretty hot and humid in the summer. Maybe not as hot as San Antonio but if you made it to the Porsche Parade last summer at Lake of the Ozarks, you know!

    Or perhaps they replaced the decklid condenser with the one in the fender to reduce temps underhood. Without an oil cooler, the decklid condenser definitely would decrease the effectiveness of the engine cooling.

    It's not a bad idea if done well, and if the fender condenser has at least as much capacity as the decklid part.

    Also, the blower and the vents are in good shape and working. Not sure about the blower on the front condenser though. Floor is still solid on the front pan but I sure don’t want to let that go too far, especially if I have to repair or replace the front condenser anyway.

    Okay, I like that reasoning.
    Maybe delivered with factory air and then customized once delivered. And, instead of useing hoses that leak, or ordering expensive parts, they just used a copper line?

    This system would not be difficult to return to stock. But be advised: Even with a rotary compressor A/C will run the oil temp up at least 25-30 degrees which will eventually take a toll on the mag case. Always a good idea to have aux oil cooling.

    What I do find odd is that your front trunk floor is missing the sheet metal "boxed shroud" for front condenser fan that's normally welded into the floor on Behr equipped cars. Does it look like that piece was replaced at one time? Is A/C listed on your COA?

    FYI: We did testing years ago and that front condenser fan accomplishes almost nothing. We got maybe a 5 psi difference in discharge pressure with the fan not working. And that was with an ambient temp of over 110. In other words; don't lose any sleep if it ain't workin.

    As Frank says, you definitely want to make sure you install a later Carrera cooler in the right front fender or you will overheat the engine. Where you live, you probably need the cooler A/C or not.
    Do you at least have the optional trombone cooler in the right fender?

    Thank-you and yes it is Bahia Red. Good eye!

    The first option on the COA is “equipment for Puerto Rico”. Very vague...it does not list A/C. It does have the trombone cooler running to the front right fender, also not mentioned. About the front blower box, it doesn’t look like anything has been replaced. I can take some more pics if you’d like to help me solve that mystery. I’m really curious about this car. It came with an interesting story from long time Porsche expert and previous owner, Reid Vann but without much for documentation. Do you know this car by chance? “Reportedly”, it went from Puerto Rico to Japan where it was repainted and “restored” but no documentation what they did and where. It has Japanese seat belts dated 1994 and a ‘90’s Japanese’s issued Bridgestone spare. Sometime around 2012 it was back in California at CPR with no clue if they did anything. The California title shows actual mileage at 22,000 km. That and the COA are my only documents. Reid bought it from CPR, brought it to St. Louis. I bought it from him. Summing up, I have very little documentation!
