Factory museum contact/ anybody plan to visit

    All,

I am working on documenting the rear window wiper set-up as used on early cars without the decklid provision for the wiper gearbox. The factory museum has a slate grey? 66? coupe with this set-up. This car seems to rotate in and out of the museum display. Does anybody have a contact at the museum who could possible help with some detailed pictures and measurements? I used to have good contacts at the archives but no longer since both Klaus and Jens left.

    TIA,

    JK

Just beware that slate grey 66 is a 25 year restauration and not even in its original color.
You might better go to original cars seen here on this board, they are better than the few early shown at the museum in Stuttgart.

    Ha!

Porsche museum would be the last place I would expect to find period correct accuracy.

I had never read such literal words that reflect a bit of the truth of the museum. Even so, I have a visit pending! I think the same as 911T1971 and Frank. Better look for images here of some without restoring. Maybe what you see does not look quite right, but to know colors etc I think it will look better in them than in a restored car. I, in my case, draw the references of the car itself. For now I have clear that the "wheel passes" are in the color of the body. Something I've seen in doubt several times ... I'm wrong, but what I want to say is that it is best seen in photos and dirty things ... Here the details are hidden in my humble opinion

What I do believe may be accurate at the museum... is a consistency to follow the culture and pragmatism that Dr. Porsche built his empire on. It seems to me that he nor his production teams got caught up AT ALL in "form" like we do when it comes to such prosaic utilities as fasteners. It was "function first". I am convinced he would be laughing hysterically at people today who desperately try so hard to mimic the brand of a fastener when at the time, the production line was simply pulling them out of a box and sometimes brands were mixed.

I look at the state of restoration today and view it as bordering on utter madness. For some it's fashioning jewelry; others merely want the car to represent in spirit what the good doctor ordered.

    Off my soapbox now.

I understand about all the comments with regard to the level of authenticity of the cars at the museum. I have been there and witnessed it first hand. That said, this car has the special rear wiper mount as shown in the early accessory brochure and described and shown in the workshop manual. As much as I have tried I have not been able to locate any other cars with one to take measurements from outside of the car in the museum.

I took a quick look through my database and found a dozen 1967 911 with the rear window wiper option, but none in previous model years. Was it first offered in 1967 MY, or is it just extremely rare in prior model years?

The official origin of the Porsche rear wiper is explained here:

And I'm glad that my 928s don't have this equipment.

I believe that it was available from October '65 onwards. The link listed above has a picture of the car in the museum
