Language experts: Here's one for you.

I've noticed over the last 10-15 years a ridiculous habit, mainly by older men:

Engaging in conversation without finishing sentences.

It drives me absolutely nuts when someone doesn't finish their thought process before jumping into a new one. This seems to be a fairly contemporary phenomenon. I was speaking with a guy over the weekend for a good 30 minutes and I'm pretty sure that he didn't complete one full sentence.

    What's the deal?

    Early symptoms of Dementia?

Early dementia? In the last few years of her life my ma ended every sentence (finished or not) with "at any rate...". She was intelligent and self-aware enough to not leave her statements unfinished, even if she didn't remember what she was saying. Her dementia came very slowly, and "At any rate..." was an effective cover for her failing memory, until it became a tell in and of itself.
How does one give thoughtful and attentive ear to someone who doesn't bother to finish the point they themselves are making? On a related note, how about those who ask a question and interrupt it's answer with another unrelated question? At any rate...

I mention it because my uncle battled this habit as early onset Dementia was beginning to consume him. Wicked, Wicked disease.

Because we care about others and what they have to say, in spite of language and communication barriers? But I do concede: It's incredibly frustrating.
