Thread: Fan color

    Fan color

A while back I posted a picture of my restored fan. Everybody was generally complimentary but I remember a partial discussion led by Frank Beck saying original had a yellowish coating. I don't think a picture was ever provided. Found this on soon to be auction car at Bonhams. Is this the color desired? Name: Fan color.jpg

This is from the 700 mile 1970 911 s (taken years later, but looks uncleaned)
Maybe part of the color is that wax they sprayed on for weatherproofing.
    Or just oil stain.
The riveted center section is yellow metal coating.

You can't achieve "ugly" with paint or bonded surface coating.

    This was actually Tom's thread:

    Gordon,
Is it the angle of pic or is that fan sitting a bit proud? It has that look of a 75 amp alternator in a 50 amp housing.

Frank, It’s the angle of the pix. Perfect belt alignment, been that way for 30 years. Gordon

One of the biggest mistakes I made with my car early in my ownership...cleaning the "grime" off of my fan.

Not sure how “correct” my fan turned out but once I had it media blasted it looked a bit too new for my liking. I applied a solution of phosphoric acid and water from a spray bottle and rinsed it off after about 30 seconds. It darkened the color of the fan and shroud to my liking. That was done 5 years ago and it still looks great today. I occasionally treat the fan and shroud to a wipe down with Gibbs to keep it looking good.
