Speedo Angle Drive Set Screw into Transmission with Broken Helicoil

I was working to replace the original Speedo Angle Drive unit on my 1970 911T, which was giving me a clicking noise independent of the speedo cable.

The set screw above the angle drive was loosened to release the angle drive unit. But the set screw was wiggling in it's threads as I was loosening it, which felt weird.

When I went to re-install the set screw, I realized that the set screw threads had a helicoil in the transmission case that had broken free of the case. Note the red Loctite. See the photos below.

Is there supposed to be a helicoil in the transmission case in this area or was this area repaired by a previous mechanic?

The transmission was rebuilt about 10 years ago.

    Anyone else have this problem?

    Thanks,

I think a properly installed heli-coil will work for you, obviously that one wasn't correctly done. I don't think it was originally inserted because I know I have had to install inserts to fix those threads. You also need to get that throttle boot over the throttle link,,,

With enough thickness in that spot, a careful tap of 15% larger pitch might alleviate the helicoil.

Thanks Ed. Can you recommend a more permanent solution, if I remove the transmission nose cone to do the repair?

Good catch on the throttle boot. Can anyone provide a photo for the correct boot position?

I like this idea, but the factory bolt has a specific tip to set against the angle drive unit.

    Thanks,

    Thanks,

I meant set screw for factory bolt.

Yes. The phrase 'nothing is easy' is a favorite...more hassle would be a metal insert plug to receive a new drill and tap for the screw.

A time-zert works just as well.
