I confirmed with a friend who runs a dealership in FL that this is happening, his response was,
"This is something that Porsche will be rolling out fully and when they do, we will be an authorized location. In the mean time we have been sending our technicians to heavy air cooled and classic training all over the country in preparation for this. At the moment though, we cannot perform this. But like I said, that will change as soon as the program is fully rolled out to the dealers."

I could understand creating a "Classic" division 10-15 years ago, when values were modest and lots of cars were awaiting restoration. But how many early 911's are still out there awaiting restoration? How many owners are going to take their cars to the dealership with a tech who went to a training seminar vs their trusted independent who has decades of experience? Dealers are held in low regard by owners of old 911's. What market is Porsche tapping into here? Just doesn't seem to make sense.
And I love the idea that some guy at a Porsche dealer who went to a couple of seminars is going to be "authenticating" early 911's and issuing inspection reports and certificates. This is going to be a comedy of errors and totally embarrassing for Porsche when these guys keep getting everything wrong. There probably aren't 100 guys in the country who know enough to be professionally employed doing this kind of work. What in the world is Porsche thinking?
My history with the COA...
When it first came out, I thought "well that's kind of cool" but the $$$ value wasn't there for me.
Up until the recent past, my frequenting of this forum indicated that all one got with the COA was a document that was highly suspect (based on the potential for errors).
Now, they want me to pay to bring my car down to a dealer validate their database. SMH

First and foremost..
Anyone who is "approved" to verify the finer details of pre 74 Porsches will probably not own one or ever will.
Is this an issue???
Yeah,,, but.
As our Co Moderator Peter has expressed,,,
What is the actual need other than to "sponge" off and charge for what we have here on this forum re knowledge anyway.
Stuff COA , Kardex and the like.
6 horizontal cylinders, Metal, rubber, glass and 3 gallons of oil and a squirt of benzine,,
It's all they really are.
Who bloody cares ,,
REALLY !!

I hope they learn how to close the lids on a 356. Imagine coming to pick up your newly authenticated jewel only find the hood kinked. And only 500 bucks.

I know Porsche isn't Ferrari, but if your going to go in this direction I would think the way they go about it actually provides some value.

Porsche are probably on a hiding to nothing if they think training a few folks will get up to snuff.
In the UK there are maybe five people I would take seriously if pronouncing on an RS ( as just one year model example among many many classic variations) None of the cognacenti are dealarship network ...in fact to earlier points knowledge acquired over years from when details were discussed not written down ..and half are enjoying well earned semi retirement. While kicking tyres of cars in person or critique virtually on www is fun as a hobby unlikely they'd want to have to do this seriously pulling on overalls in response to a paid service with appointments procedures etc etc.
Liability for Porsche as OEM and importer / retailer if in middle of a pesto or a Seinfeld type spat where certificates used would give corporate lawyer kittens.
Also if needing to refer back or provide reference info as part of service global data protection the onerous controls might limit the data they can share if personal data exists on things like kardex records. There are folks still living who have kardex entries and even live at the same address.
The fines for GDPR breach are eyewatering.

Doubt Porsche and parent will want to take much risk of scandal and fine or reputational damage risk after the emissions debacle ...
At a recent off-site event PCGB were wringing his hands about having to handle and transport personal name info they'd gathered from attendees to the HQ down the road .. the individual was nervous about the responsibility he told me as wrapping up the pop up Porsche stall.
As a former group operations director of well known OEM with a rich marque history I'm not sure I'd relish standing up this sort of service offering for OEM in the current climate.
